On your Altima, the rear bulbs are accessed from inside the trunk, behind the trunk side trim. You’ll remove the bulb socket(s), swap the bulb(s), and reinstall everything the same way so the seal stays watertight.

• Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work.
• Decide which bulbs you’re replacing: tail/brake, turn signal, and/or reverse. (You can replace only the sockets you need.)

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Verify the failed bulb function

• Turn the lights on and check what’s out (tail/running, brake, turn, or reverse).
• Use a small flashlight to look at the lens and confirm which section is dark.
• Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.

Step 2: Access the taillight bulb sockets from the trunk (left side)

• On the left trunk wall behind the taillight, remove the trim access cover (if equipped) using a trim clip removal tool.
• If there are push-clips holding the trunk liner, pop them out using a trim clip removal tool.
• If your liner uses screws, remove them using a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket you need (left side)

• Find the correct socket going into the back of the taillight assembly.
• Grip the socket and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise to unlock, then pull it straight out.
• If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t pry on the plastic with metal tools.

Step 4: Replace the bulb (left side)

• Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some bulbs twist out; if so, twist counterclockwise, then pull).
• Install the new bulb by matching the base style exactly.
• Use nitrile gloves to avoid touching bulb glass (if it’s not an LED).
• Before reinstalling, look at the bulb number printed on the old bulb and match it when buying replacements.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and check operation (left side)

• Insert the socket back into the taillight housing and rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
• Test the light function you replaced (tail/brake/turn/reverse) before putting the trim back.
• If it doesn’t work, remove the socket again and make sure the bulb is fully seated.

Step 6: Repeat the same steps on the right side

• Move to the right trunk wall and repeat Step 2 through Step 5.
• Use the small flashlight again to confirm you’re removing the correct socket.

Step 7: Reinstall trunk trim

• Reposition the trunk liner and reinstall any screws using a Phillips screwdriver.
• Reinstall any push-clips by pressing them in by hand (use the trim clip removal tool only if needed to align).

✅ After Repair

• Test all rear lighting: tail/running lights, brake lights, hazards/turn signals, and reverse lights.
• Check that the bulb socket is fully locked to prevent water leaks into the taillight.
• If a bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse and the socket contacts (corrosion/heat damage).
