🔧 Expedition - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Expedition, each rear taillamp assembly comes off with two fasteners, then the bulb sockets twist out from the back. Replacing both sides is the same process—do one side at a time so nothing gets mixed up.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸 Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🔸 Let bulbs cool; they can be hot right after use.
- 🔸 Wear gloves and don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- 🔸 No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulb (dual-filament: tail/stop/turn, typically 3157) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate so you can access the taillamp fasteners.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the taillamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate.
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension to remove the two taillamp bolts on the inboard edge of the lamp (near the liftgate opening).
- Set the bolts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the bumper area.
Step 2: Pull the taillamp assembly out
- Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it pop free (it’s held by alignment pins).
- Tip: Pull straight back—don’t pry hard sideways.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Find the socket for the taillight bulb (the red lens bulb; usually the larger dual-filament bulb).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out of the housing.
- If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for better grip.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if needed).
- Install the new rear taillight bulb (typically 3157) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Use nitrile gloves to avoid touching the bulb glass.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp
- Insert the socket back into the taillamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Line up the taillamp’s locating pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the two bolts using the 8mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) (snug only—do not overtighten).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same steps for the other rear taillamp assembly.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlamps on and confirm both taillights illuminate evenly.
- Press the brake pedal (have a helper watch) to confirm both brake lights work.
- Test turn signals and hazards to confirm the same bulb is working for turn/stop (common on this setup).
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket again and make sure the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
