🔧 CR-V - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the left and right taillight bulbs by accessing the bulb sockets from inside the rear cargo area. This restores your running lights and brake lights so you stay visible and legal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool for a few minutes; they can get very hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Keep the hatch supported and don’t work where traffic can hit you.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear stop/taillight bulb (dual-filament, 7443 type) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear hatch and clear the cargo area so you can reach both side panels.
- Set your flashlight nearby so you can see the bulb socket clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the left taillight bulb socket
- Open the rear hatch and go to the left rear cargo trim panel.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop off the small access cover (or gently pry the edge of the panel opening if your CR-V has a round/rectangular service door).
- Use a flashlight to locate the taillight bulb socket (it’s on the back side of the taillight housing).
Step 2: Remove the socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand, then pull it straight out.
- If a trim fastener blocks your hand, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw (if equipped), then re-position the panel slightly.
Step 3: Replace the bulb (left side)
- Put on nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new 7443 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test (left side)
- Insert the socket back into the housing and rotate clockwise by hand until it stops (snug).
- Turn on the parking lights to confirm the taillight is on.
- Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) to confirm the brake light is bright. Use a wall reflection to check.
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Move to the right rear cargo trim panel.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool and flashlight to access the right taillight socket.
- Remove the socket by hand (1/4 turn counterclockwise), replace the bulb, and reinstall the socket (snug by hand).
Step 6: Reinstall trim/access covers
- Reinstall any access covers and press them back into place by hand.
- If you removed any screws, reinstall them using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only; do not over-tighten).
✅ After Repair
- Check all rear lights: taillights (running lights), brake lights, and turn signals.
- If a new bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket again and make sure the bulb is fully pushed in.
- If one side still doesn’t light, the socket contacts may be corroded (green/white crust). Don’t force it.
