🔧 Civic - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the rear bulbs on both left and right taillight assemblies from inside the trunk. Most “taillight” complaints are the tail/brake bulb (running light + brake light in one bulb), but you can use the same access to replace the turn or reverse bulb if needed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight area in the trunk

• Use flashlight to locate the access area behind the taillight (left and right sides of the trunk).
• If there’s a trunk side cover or liner in the way, use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any clips and pull the liner back.
• Tip: Work slowly so clips don’t snap.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket (no need to remove the whole lamp)

• Find the wiring and bulb socket going into the back of the taillight housing.
• Grip the socket and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand, then pull it straight out.
• If space is tight, use nitrile gloves for grip.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

• Pull the bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
• Use flashlight to read the bulb number stamped on the base (this helps match the correct replacement).

Step 4: Install the new bulb

• Put on nitrile gloves (or hold the bulb with a clean paper towel).
• Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
• Tip: If it feels loose, it’s not seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and secure the trunk liner

• Insert the socket back into the housing and rotate clockwise until it locks.
• Reposition the trunk liner and press clips back in by hand; use the trim clip removal tool to align clips if needed.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

• Do the same steps for the other taillight so both bulbs match in brightness and color.

• 🔎 Test running lights (headlights ON), then press the brake pedal (use a helper or back up near a wall to see reflection).
• 🔁 Test turn signals and hazards to confirm nothing else is out.
• 💧 Check that the bulb socket is fully locked to help prevent moisture inside the lens.
