🔧 Civic - Taillight Bulb Replacement

This job replaces the rear taillight bulbs on both sides so your running lights and brake lights work correctly. On your Civic, the bulbs are accessed from inside the trunk—no bumper removal needed.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Open the trunk and clear out cargo so you can reach both rear corners.
• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the left taillight bulb socket

• Use a flashlight to look behind the left trunk liner near the taillight area.
• Use a plastic trim removal tool to open/remove the small access cover (or gently pull the liner back if there’s no cover).
• You’ll see the bulb socket going into the taillight housing.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket

• Grip the socket firmly (wear nitrile gloves for better grip).
• Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn until it unlocks, then pull it straight out.
• Tip: Turn slowly; don’t force plastic.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

• Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
• Install the new rear stop/taillight bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
• A “bulb socket” is the plastic holder the bulb plugs into.
• Do not touch the bulb glass—hold it by the base (use nitrile gloves).

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test the light

• Insert the socket back into the taillight housing.
• Turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
• Turn on the headlights to confirm the taillight illuminates.
• Press the brake pedal to confirm the brake light works (use a helper, or back up near a wall to see the reflection).

Step 5: Repeat on the right side

• Use the flashlight to find the right-side access cover/liner opening.
• Use the plastic trim removal tool to open access, then repeat Steps 2–4 for the right bulb.

Step 6: Refit trunk trim

• Reinstall the access covers (or press the trunk liner back into place) by hand.
• Make sure the liner sits flat so it won’t snag cargo later.

• Verify: taillights on with headlights, and brake lights brighten when braking.
• Check that both sockets are fully locked; a loose socket can cause flickering.
• Keep one working old bulb as an emergency spare if it still lights.
