🔧 Odyssey - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove each rear taillight housing from the outside of the van, then swap the burned-out bulbs and reinstall the housings. This avoids fighting tight access from inside and helps prevent breaking the bulb sockets.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot after use.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the taillight housing with your hand so it doesn’t fall and crack.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or small ft-lb)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulbs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park the Odyssey on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear hatch for access to the taillight fasteners.
  • Lay a microfiber towel on the bumper corner under the taillight to protect paint.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs on both sides together.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Assumption: You’re replacing the outer taillight bulbs in the rear lamp housings (not the high-mount stop lamp on the hatch).

Step 1: Remove the taillight access covers

  • Open the hatch and locate the small interior trim covers behind each taillight.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the covers off.

Step 2: Remove the taillight housing fasteners

  • Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension to remove the taillight mounting nuts/bolts you can see behind the covers.
  • Place the hardware somewhere safe so it won’t fall into the body cavity.

Step 3: Release the taillight housing from the body

  • Hold the taillight with one hand.
  • Pull the taillight straight rearward with steady pressure to release the alignment pins (plastic locating pegs).
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool carefully at the edge to help it start moving.
  • Tip: Don’t pry on the painted metal.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
  • A “socket” is the plastic piece that holds the bulb and has the wiring plugged into it.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves to avoid touching the bulb glass.
  • Remove the old bulb:
    • If it’s a wedge-style bulb, pull it straight out.
    • If it’s a twist-lock style bulb, push in slightly and twist to remove.
  • Install the new bulb fully seated in the socket.
  • Wipe the bulb with a microfiber towel if you accidentally touched the glass.

Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket(s)

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Make sure the socket is fully seated to keep water out.

Step 7: Test the lights before bolting it back

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the light functions:
    • Parking lights ON
    • Brake lights (have someone press the brake, or use a heavy object carefully)
    • Turn signals and hazard lights
    • Reverse lights (only if you replaced those)
  • Turn ignition back OFF after testing.

Step 8: Reinstall the taillight housing

  • Line up the taillight’s locating pins with the body holes, then press the housing straight in until it seats flush.
  • Reinstall the mounting hardware using an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Tighten evenly: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
  • Snap the interior trim covers back in using hand pressure.

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same steps for the other taillight.

âś… After Repair

  • Confirm all rear lights work: tail, brake, turn, hazard, and reverse (as applicable).
  • Check that both taillight housings sit evenly and gaps match the body.
  • After the next car wash or rain, look inside the lens for condensation (a sign the socket isn’t seated).
