🔧 Elantra - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the rear outer taillight bulbs on both sides (left and right) from inside the trunk. This is usually a simple twist-out bulb socket job—no bumper removal needed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and switch all exterior lights OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and don’t touch the glass bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ If your taillights are LED (no removable bulb/socket), the bulb is not serviceable and the lamp assembly must be replaced.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Trim panel tool (specialty)
- Needle-nose pliers
- Flashlight
- Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulb (outer lamp: tail/stop/turn as equipped) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Elantra on level ground and open the trunk.
- Remove any trunk cargo so you have room to work.
- Confirm which function is out: tail/running light, brake light, or turn signal. (This helps you pick the correct bulb.)
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight bulb area (left side)
- Use a flashlight to locate the trunk side trim access cover behind the left taillight.
- Remove the cover using a trim panel tool (specialty).
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket
- Find the bulb socket for the failed light (you’ll see it twisting into the back of the lamp).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, gently help it with needle-nose pliers (do not crush the plastic).
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (some styles take a slight wiggle).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area if it looks dry. Less is better.
Step 4: Reinstall the bulb socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Turn the lights on and test that side:
- Tail/running lights ON.
- Press brake pedal (have a helper watch, or back near a wall reflection).
- Turn signal on that side.
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Move to the right trunk trim access cover and remove it using the trim panel tool (specialty).
- Repeat bulb socket removal and bulb replacement steps on the right side.
Step 6: If you removed lamp mounting nuts (only if needed)
- If access is limited and you had to loosen/remove the lamp retaining nuts, reinstall them using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm).
- Do not overtighten—lamp plastic can crack.
âś… After Repair
- Reinstall both trunk access covers and make sure they’re seated flat.
- Verify all rear lighting functions: tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
- If a new bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse and the socket condition (corrosion/overheating).
