šŸ”§ Grand Cherokee - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Grand Cherokee, the taillight bulbs sit inside the rear lamp housings on the left and right rear corners. Replacing them means removing each lamp housing, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling everything so the seals stay weather-tight.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Bulbs can get very hot—let them cool for 5-10 minutes.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life). Use gloves.
  • āš ļø Pull the lamp housing straight back—don’t pry hard on the painted body.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight bulb (dual-filament, 3157 type) - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate so you can access the taillamp screws.
  • Lay a towel nearby for the lamp.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the left taillamp housing screws

  • Open the liftgate and locate the two screws on the inboard edge of the left taillamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening).
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove both screws.
  • Place the screws somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the bumper area.

Step 2: Pull the taillamp housing out

  • Grip the lamp housing with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help start it, but keep pressure straight back (there are locating pins that pop out).
  • Set the housing on a towel so you don’t scratch the lens or paint.

Step 3: Remove the taillight bulb socket

  • Find the socket for the taillight bulb (the main red lens bulb). The socket is the round plastic piece that twists into the housing.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • ā€œCounterclockwiseā€ means lefty-loosey.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new 3157-type taillight bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Before reinstalling the housing, turn the lights on to confirm:
    • Parking lights = taillight glows dim.
    • Brake pedal = taillight gets brighter.
  • Turn the lights back OFF.

Step 6: Reinstall the taillamp housing

  • Line up the locating pins on the lamp with the body holes.
  • Press the housing straight in until it seats flush.
  • Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten snug by hand (do not over-tighten).

Step 7: Repeat on the right side

  • Repeat Steps 1-6 for the right taillamp.

āœ… After Repair

  • Test all rear lighting: parking lights, brakes, turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • Make sure both lamp housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove it and rotate/re-seat it firmly in the socket.
