🔧 Grand Caravan - Taillight Bulb Replacement

Replacing the taillight bulbs on your Grand Caravan is a quick job that usually involves removing each rear lamp housing, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling everything.

You’ll do the same procedure on the left and right sides. Avoid touching the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers to help it last longer.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ If bulbs were recently on, let them cool for 5-10 minutes.
  • ⚠️ Don’t pull hard on wiring—twist sockets out instead.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight bulb (3157, dual-filament) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate so you can access the rear lamp fasteners.
  • Put on nitrile gloves to keep oils off the new bulb glass.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the left rear lamp assembly

  • Open the liftgate and locate the rear lamp screws on the inside edge of the left lamp.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screws.
  • Carefully pull the lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it break free. Pull straight back, not sideways.

Step 2: Remove the taillight bulb socket

  • Find the socket that corresponds to the taillight bulb (typically a larger socket for a 3157 style bulb).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand and pull it out.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new 3157 bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Reinstall the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.

Step 4: Reinstall the left lamp assembly

  • Line up the locating pins with their holes and press the lamp straight in until it sits flush.
  • Reinstall the screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) (snug only—do not overtighten).

Step 5: Repeat on the right side

  • Repeat Steps 1-4 for the right rear lamp using the same Phillips #2 screwdriver and plastic trim removal tool.
  • Replace the second 3157 bulb so both sides match brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and switch the headlamps on—verify both taillights illuminate evenly.
  • Press the brake pedal and verify both brake lights get brighter.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove that lamp again and confirm the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
