🔧 F-150 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each taillight housing, swap the bulbs, then reinstall the housing. This is a simple job, but the housings have alignment pins that can break if you pry them the wrong way.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Pull the taillight straight back—don’t pry sideways (alignment pins can crack).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim panel removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean rag
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Tail/Stop/Turn bulb (3157 type) - Qty: 2
- Reverse bulb (921 type) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the tailgate for easier access to the taillight fasteners.
- Trim tool = plastic pry tool for clips.
- Assumption: your housings use 3157 and 921 bulbs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the taillight screws (one side)
- Open the tailgate.
- Use an 8mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the two screws on the inner edge of the taillight (the edge closest to the tailgate opening).
Step 2: Pull the taillight housing off
- Hold the taillight with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you) to release the alignment pins.
- If it’s stuck, use a trim panel removal tool very gently at the outer edge and apply light pressure while pulling straight back.
- Don’t twist the housing—pins can snap.
Step 3: Remove the bulb sockets
- Turn each bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
- Common layout: the larger dual-filament socket is usually the Tail/Stop/Turn (3157), and the clear section socket is usually the Reverse (921).
Step 4: Replace the bulbs
- For push-in bulbs: pull the old bulb straight out of the socket, then push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
- Use nitrile gloves or a clean rag to avoid touching the bulb glass.
- Apply a very thin smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the metal contacts).
Step 5: Reinstall the sockets and housing
- Insert each socket back into the housing and turn clockwise until it locks fully by hand.
- Line up the housing’s alignment pins with the body grommets and push the housing straight in until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the two screws using the 8mm socket and ratchet.
- Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs)
Step 6: Repeat on the other taillight
- Repeat Steps 1–5 on the opposite side to replace the bulbs on both taillights.
âś… After Repair
- 🔦 Test all rear lights: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards, and reverse lights.
- Check that both housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, remove that socket and confirm the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
