🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Replacement

On your F-150, the rear lamp assembly is removed from inside the bed-side access area, then the bulb socket is turned out of the housing. Replace both sides together so brightness and color stay matched.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Do not touch glass bulb surfaces with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • Set the parking brake and shift to Park.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Be careful not to crack the taillamp lens when pulling the housing outward.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Bulb socket seals - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground with the transmission in Park and the parking brake set.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the rear lamp fasteners.
  • Keep the new bulbs in their packaging until you are ready to install them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the tailgate and access the taillamp fasteners

  • Open the tailgate fully.
  • Use a 7mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the two taillamp retaining bolts on the side you are servicing.
  • Keep the bolts in a cup.

Step 2: Remove the taillamp housing

  • Grip the taillamp assembly and pull it straight rearward to release the locator pins.
  • If it feels stuck, use a trim panel tool to gently help it move free. Do not pry hard on the lens.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Locate the bulb socket on the back of the taillamp housing.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
  • Twist, then pull.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new bulb in the socket.
  • If the bulb has alignment pins, make sure it sits fully and straight.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the taillamp housing.
  • Turn it clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Set the taillamp housing back into place and make sure the locator pins line up.
  • Install the two 7mm bolts and tighten them snugly. Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same process on the opposite taillamp.
  • Replace both bulbs so both sides match in brightness and age.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights and check both taillamps.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lamps work.
  • Test the turn signals and hazard lights if those bulbs were part of the taillamp assembly.
  • Make sure the housings sit flush and the tailgate closes without interference.
