🔧 F-150 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove each taillight housing, twist out the bulb socket(s), and install new bulbs. This is needed when a brake/turn/tail or reverse bulb burns out, gets dim, or fails intermittently.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Open the tailgate to access the taillight retaining screws.
• Have your replacement bulbs ready so you don’t leave sockets hanging.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight fasteners

• Open the tailgate.
• Locate the two retaining screws on the inboard edge of the taillight (the side facing the tailgate opening).

Step 2: Remove the taillight housing

• Remove both screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (or use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet if your screws have hex heads).
• Pull the taillight straight rearward to release the locating pins.
• If it feels stuck, use a trim panel tool to gently start it moving at the edge. Pull straight back, not sideways.
• When reinstalling screws: Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket(s)

• Identify the socket for the bulb you’re replacing (brake/turn/tail or reverse).
• Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out of the housing.
• If needed, use a flashlight to see which socket you’re turning.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

• Wear nitrile gloves to avoid touching the bulb glass.
• Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
• Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
• Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry. (Dielectric grease helps keep moisture out.)

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and taillight

• Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
• Align the taillight locating pins with the body grommets, then press the housing straight in until fully seated.
• Install the two retaining screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (or 8mm socket with 1/4" drive ratchet).
• Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

• Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other taillight so both sides match in brightness and color.

✅ After Repair

• Test lights with the ignition on: tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards, and reverse lights.
• If a bulb doesn’t work, remove that socket again and confirm it’s fully locked and the bulb is fully seated.
• Check that the taillight sits flush to the body and doesn’t wiggle.
