🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

To replace both rear taillight bulbs on your Jetta, you’ll access the bulb holders from inside the trunk, remove each socket, swap the bulbs, and reinstall everything in the same orientation. This is a simple job, but the plastic tabs and bulb holders can break if they’re forced, so work slowly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool first. Halogen bulbs can burn you if they were just on.
  • Do not touch new bulbs with bare fingers. Skin oil shortens bulb life.
  • Work gently on the bulb holders and clips. The plastic gets brittle with age.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat trim tool
  • Flashlight
  • Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulbs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and clear out any cargo blocking the rear lamp access panels.
  • Keep the replacement bulbs ready before you remove the old ones.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and locate the access area

  • Use a flashlight to find the rear lamp service covers inside the trunk near each taillight.
  • Pull back the trunk liner by hand or use a flat trim tool if needed.
  • Work slowly to avoid cracking the liner.

Step 2: Remove the bulb holder

  • Reach behind the taillight and twist the bulb holder counterclockwise by hand.
  • Pull the bulb holder straight out once it unlocks.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently. Do not pry hard.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket by pulling it straight out.
  • Install the new bulb by pressing it straight in until it seats fully.
  • Use a clean microfiber cloth when handling the new bulb.
  • Match the bulb tabs before pushing it in.

Step 4: Reinstall the bulb holder

  • Align the bulb holder with the housing opening.
  • Use your hand to twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • Make sure it sits flush and does not wobble.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same process for the other taillight bulb.
  • Confirm both sides are installed the same way.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the parking lights on and check both taillights.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights work.
  • Have someone confirm the lights from outside the vehicle if possible.
  • If a bulb still does not work, recheck that it is fully seated in the socket.
