🔧 Highlander - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Highlander, the left and right taillight bulbs can be replaced from inside the rear cargo area. This is usually a quick job: open the access doors, twist out the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and test.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool; they can be very hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this bulb replacement.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear liftgate and remove any cargo near the taillight access areas.
- Have your flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the left taillight bulb area
- Open the liftgate.
- On the left side cargo trim, locate the small access door/cover behind the taillight area.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop the access cover open.
- Tip: Pry slowly to avoid snapping clips.
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket
- Look for the taillight bulb socket (a round plastic base going into the taillight).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand.
- Pull the socket straight out.
- Tip: If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t force it.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves. (These keep skin oils off the bulb.)
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new 7443 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If your replacement is an LED type and it doesn’t work later, remove it and rotate 180° (polarity-sensitive).
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and close the access cover
- Insert the socket back into the taillight housing.
- Turn it clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Tightening spec: Toyota does not publish a torque spec for this twist-lock socket—turn until fully locked, do not over-tighten.
- Snap the access cover back into place by hand.
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Move to the right side cargo trim access cover.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to open it.
- Repeat Steps 2–4 with the second 7443 bulb.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the light switch ON and verify both sides illuminate (parking lights).
- Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights get brighter (ask a helper or back up near a wall to see the reflection).
- If a bulb doesn’t work, re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
