🔧 Forester - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the left and right rear taillight (tail/brake) bulbs from inside the cargo area. This restores proper rear lighting for nighttime visibility and braking safety.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: You’re replacing the tail/brake bulbs inside the rear combination lamps (not reverse or turn bulbs).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If using LED bulbs, confirm they are “CANbus/error-free” to reduce hyperflash or warnings.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or small Nm range)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/brake bulb (dual-filament) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate and clear the cargo area for room to work.
  • Put on nitrile gloves (thin protective gloves) to keep oils off the bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight bulb area (each side)

  • Open the liftgate and look at the side trim panels in the cargo area.
  • Use a flashlight to find the small service/access cover behind each taillight area (left and right).
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the access cover open.

Step 2: Remove the tail/brake bulb socket

  • Locate the socket for the tail/brake bulb (usually the larger, dual-contact bulb socket in the rear lamp).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you touched the glass, wipe with alcohol.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp, making sure the tabs line up.
  • Twist the socket clockwise to lock it in place snugly (hand-tight).
  • Turn the lights on to confirm tail lights illuminate.
  • Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) to confirm the brake lights get brighter.

Step 5: If you cannot reach the socket, remove the lamp assembly (alternate method)

  • If the access opening is too tight, remove the rear lamp assembly to get more room.
  • From inside the cargo area, use a plastic trim removal tool to remove any trim caps covering the lamp fasteners.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to remove the lamp retaining nuts/bolts.
  • Carefully pull the lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • Replace the bulb as in Steps 2–4.
  • Reinstall the lamp and fasteners: Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall any trim caps/covers. If a screw is used on your trim, install it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver snugly (do not overtighten).

✅ After Repair

  • Verify: tail lights ON, brake lights brighten, and both sides match in color/brightness.
  • Make sure all access covers and trim pieces are fully clipped back in to prevent rattles.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and reseat the bulb firmly, then retest.
