🔧 Cherokee - Tail/Brake Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each rear lamp assembly, swap the bulb(s), then reinstall everything and test the lights. On your Cherokee, the rear bulbs are serviced from inside the cargo area and the lamp comes off with a couple of nuts.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: you’re replacing the outer tail/brake bulbs (left + right).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; oils from skin can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Do not force the lamp—plastic locating pins can break.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear tail/brake light bulb (match bulb number from old bulb) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate and remove any cargo that blocks the side trim access panels.
- Put on nitrile gloves (they help keep bulb glass clean).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate and use a flashlight to look at the carpet/trim area behind the tail lamp (left side for driver lamp, right side for passenger lamp).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to open/remove the small access cover (a trim tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches).
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp nuts
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
- Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trim.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) during reinstallation.
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- From outside the vehicle, hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle while pulling straight back—don’t pry the painted body edge.
- Pull straight back to protect the alignment pins.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket
- Locate the tail/brake bulb socket on the back of the lamp.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (use nitrile gloves for grip).
- Install the new bulb by pushing it fully into the socket.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean and dry before installing.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp
- Reinsert the bulb socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the lamp’s locating pins with the body grommets, then push the lamp straight inward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the nuts using the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet, then Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the access cover using the plastic trim removal tool (press it in by hand).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–6 for the other rear lamp.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, and hazards.
- Confirm both lamps sit flush with the body and do not wiggle.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, remove it and re-seat it fully in the socket.
