How to Replace Both Tail Light Bulbs on a 2021 Kia Telluride (Rear Lamps)
Step-by-step taillight bulb access for body-side and liftgate lamps, with tools, parts, and safety tips

🔧 Telluride - Tail/Rear Bulb Replacement
On your Telluride, some rear light functions use replaceable bulbs, but others may be LED modules that don’t have “bulbs” and require replacing the lamp assembly. The first step is identifying which rear light function is out and which lamp section it’s in (body-side or liftgate-side).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake before starting.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Do not touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4" drive)
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear bulb (match the bulb number from your old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔎 Confirm which rear light is out: tail/running light, brake light, turn signal, or reverse light.
- 🔎 Confirm location: is the dead light on the body-side lamp (outer corner) or the liftgate lamp (on the tailgate)?
- 🧰 A plastic trim removal tool is a non-marring pry tool that helps pop trim clips without scratching.
Quick questions (reply and I’ll tailor the exact bulb location and steps):
- 1) Which function is out (turn signal, reverse, brake, or running light)?
- 2) Is it on the body-side lamp or the liftgate lamp?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Verify the failed bulb/function
- Use a flashlight and have a helper operate the lights (brake/turn/reverse) so you can confirm exactly which section is out.
- If only one side is out, swap the left and right bulbs (only if they are the same type) to confirm it’s a bulb and not wiring. Swap test saves time.
Step 2: Access the bulb (body-side rear lamp)
- Open the rear hatch.
- Look at the inside edge of the body-side tail lamp for mounting fasteners.
- If there is a small access cover, pry it gently using a plastic trim removal tool.
- Remove the retaining fastener(s) using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension (as needed for reach).
- Pull the lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins (steady, even pressure). Don’t twist the lamp.
Step 3: Access the bulb (liftgate-side rear lamp, if applicable)
- If the failed light is on the liftgate section, remove the inner liftgate trim panel fasteners using a Phillips screwdriver.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the trim clips, then lower the panel enough to reach the lamp socket.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket
- Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it from the lamp housing.
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb.
- Remove the old bulb from the socket (either pull straight out or twist-lock, depending on the bulb style).
- Match the bulb number printed on the old bulb and install the same type into the socket.
- If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall socket and lamp
- Reinsert the socket and lock it by turning clockwise by hand until fully seated.
- Reposition the lamp onto its alignment pins and press it in evenly.
- Reinstall the fastener(s) using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet and tighten snugly.
Step 7: If you find LEDs (no replaceable bulb)
- If the socket has no removable bulb, or the lamp is an LED module, the fix is typically replacing that lamp assembly.
- Stop and tell me which function is out and which lamp section it’s in, and I’ll give the exact assembly swap steps for your Telluride.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- Verify both sides match in brightness and flash rate (fast blinking can indicate a bulb/wiring issue).
- Make sure the lamp sits flush and no gaps are visible around the lens.
