How to Replace Both Tail Light Bulbs on a 2021 Jeep Gladiator (Bulb vs LED)
Step-by-step removal, bulb swap or LED housing replacement, tools needed, and tail lamp torque specs

🔧 Gladiator - Tail Light Bulb Replacement
On your Gladiator, the tail lamp housing comes off from the outside (no interior trim removal). If you have the standard bulb-style tail lamps, you’ll swap the bulb(s) from the back of the housing; if you have factory LED tail lamps, the “bulbs” aren’t serviceable and the whole tail lamp assembly gets replaced.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new glass bulbs with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t fall and scratch the paint.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the left tail lamp assembly
- Open the tailgate.
- Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the two tail lamp screws on the inside edge of the lamp (visible with the tailgate open).
- Gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it pop loose. Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 2: Disconnect wiring (so you can work comfortably)
- Support the lamp with one hand.
- Unplug the main connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling the connector apart by hand.
Step 3: Replace the “taillight” bulb(s) (bulb-style lamps only)
- Find the bulb socket(s) on the back of the tail lamp.
- Twist the correct socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket.
- Reinstall the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- If unsure, match bulb number on old bulb.
Step 4: If equipped with factory LED tail lamps (no serviceable bulbs)
- If you do not see removable bulb sockets and the lamp has a sealed rear cover, it’s an LED unit.
- Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the two screws, pull the lamp out, and use your hands to unplug the connector.
- Install the new tail lamp assembly, plug in the connector, and set the lamp into place.
Step 5: Reinstall the left tail lamp
- Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
- Align the guide pins and push the lamp straight forward into the body.
- Install the two screws using a Torx T30 screwdriver.
- Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs)
Step 6: Repeat on the right side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the right tail lamp using the same Torx T30 screwdriver and method.
âś… After Repair
- Turn on the parking lights and confirm both tail lights illuminate evenly.
- Press the brake pedal (have a helper or back up near a wall) and confirm both brake lights work.
- Test turn signals and reverse lights if you replaced those bulbs.
- Make sure both lamps sit flush and don’t wiggle.
