🔧 Crosstrek - Tail Light Bulb Replacement

On your Crosstrek, the rear bulbs are accessed from inside the cargo area (behind small trim access doors). You’ll remove the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and reinstall—no need to remove the whole tail light housing in most cases.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ If bulbs were recently on, let them cool 5–10 minutes (they can be hot).
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch glass-halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Tail/stop light bulb (match the bulb removed) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear hatch and clear the cargo area for space.
  • If you’re unsure which bulb is out, turn on the parking lights first and confirm which side/section is not lighting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which rear bulb you’re replacing

  • Use a flashlight and look at the rear lamp while someone helps operate the lights.
  • Tail lights: turn headlights/parking lights ON.
  • Brake lights: have a helper press the brake pedal.
  • Tip: Use hazard lights to spot turn bulbs.

Step 2: Open the cargo-area access door (left or right)

  • Open the hatch.
  • On the side you’re servicing, locate the small access panel in the cargo trim behind the tail light.
  • Use a plastic trim tool to gently pop open the access panel.

Step 3: Remove the correct bulb socket

  • Reach through the access opening and find the bulb socket for the lamp you’re replacing.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand and pull it straight out.
  • If space is tight, use a flashlight to confirm you’re on the correct socket.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Most Crosstrek rear bulbs are “wedge” style: pull the bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling—don’t twist the socket wiring.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Install the new bulb into the socket fully seated.
  • Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
  • Tip: Match the new bulb to the old one.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and close the access door

  • Insert the socket back into the tail light housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
  • Snap the access panel back into place by hand.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Do the same steps for the other tail light so both sides match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Test tail lights (parking lights ON), brake lights (helper presses brake), and turn signals (left/right).
  • Make sure the bulb is not flickering—if it is, remove and reseat the bulb and socket.
  • If a new bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse and the socket contacts.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$140 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours.

  • Which bulbs are you replacing: tail/brake, turn signal, or reverse?
  • Are you replacing just the outer tail light on each side, or also the hatch-mounted lights?
