🔧 Altima - Tail Light Bulb Replacement

Replacing both tail light bulbs on your Altima is a beginner-friendly job. The bulbs are accessed from inside the trunk behind the side trim panels, so you do not need to remove the whole tail lamp assembly for the main rear bulbs.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before starting so the bulbs and sockets are not powered.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on; hot bulbs can burn your fingers.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves or use a clean cloth when handling new bulbs to avoid oil from your skin getting on the glass.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber cloth
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail light bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park your Altima on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 📋 Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • 📋 Open the trunk and remove any cargo near the left and right rear corners.
  • 📋 A trim clip removal tool is a small prying tool that helps remove plastic clips without breaking them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Trunk and Locate the Access Panels

  • Use the flashlight to look at the left rear and right rear corners inside the trunk.
  • Find the carpeted trunk side trim directly behind each tail lamp.
  • The bulbs sit behind this trim, inside twist-lock plastic sockets.
  • Work one side at a time.

Step 2: Move the Trunk Trim Aside

  • Use the trim clip removal tool to gently lift the plastic trunk trim clips near the tail lamp area.
  • If a clip is tight, use the small flathead screwdriver carefully under the clip head to help start it.
  • Pull the carpeted trim back just enough to reach the bulb sockets.
  • Do not yank the trim; it can crease or crack the plastic retainers.

Step 3: Identify the Tail Light Bulb Socket

  • Use the flashlight to identify the tail light bulb socket in the rear lamp housing.
  • The tail/brake bulb socket is typically the larger twist-lock socket in the lamp assembly.
  • A socket is the plastic holder that the bulb plugs into and twists into the lamp housing.

Step 4: Remove the Old Bulb Socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves before handling the socket and bulb.
  • Grip the plastic socket by hand and turn it counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.
  • No torque spec applies because this socket is hand-tight only.

Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb

  • Use your gloved hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • If the bulb is stuck, wrap it with a clean microfiber cloth and gently wiggle it while pulling straight out.
  • Do not crush the glass bulb.

Step 6: Install the New Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber cloth to handle the new bulb.
  • Push the new rear tail light bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Make sure it is even and not tilted in the socket.
  • Do not touch bulb glass barehanded.

Step 7: Reinstall the Socket

  • Use the flashlight to align the socket tabs with the openings in the tail lamp housing.
  • Insert the socket straight into the housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
  • Do not overtighten it; the plastic tabs can break.

Step 8: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Move to the opposite side of the trunk.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool and small flathead screwdriver to move the trim aside.
  • Use the same steps to remove the old bulb, install the new bulb, and lock the socket back into place.
  • Replacing both sides together helps keep brightness even.

Step 9: Reinstall the Trunk Trim

  • Use your hands to position the carpeted trim back into place.
  • Press each plastic trim clip back into its hole by hand until it sits flush.
  • If needed, use the handle end of the small flathead screwdriver to gently press the clip in.
  • Do not hammer the clips.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the parking lights on and confirm both tail lights illuminate.
  • ✅ Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights brighten.
  • ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and verify the rear lights flash correctly if those bulbs were disturbed.
  • ✅ Check inside the trunk to make sure the trim is secure and no tools are left behind.
  • ✅ No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required.
