🔧 Grand Cherokee - Tail Light Bulb Replacement
Replacing both rear tail light bulbs on your Grand Cherokee is a beginner-friendly repair. The tail light housings come off from the outside of the vehicle, giving you access to the bulb sockets behind them.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before removing any bulbs.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep the liftgate open and stable while working around the rear lamps.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground.

- Turn the headlamp switch to Off.
- Open the liftgate fully.
- A Torx screw has a star-shaped head; use the matching T30 Torx screwdriver so you do not strip it.
- A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps release panels without scratching paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate and Locate the Lamp Screws
- Use your hands to open the liftgate fully.
- Stand at the rear corner of the vehicle and look along the inner edge of the tail light assembly.
- You will see the tail light mounting screws exposed with the liftgate open.
- Work on one side first.
Step 2: Remove the Tail Light Mounting Screws
- Use the T30 Torx screwdriver to remove the tail light mounting screws.
- Place the screws somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
- Support the lamp with one hand while removing the last screw.
Step 3: Release the Tail Light Assembly
- Use both hands to pull the tail light assembly straight rearward from the body.
- If it feels stuck, use the plastic trim removal tool gently at the outer edge to help release the retaining pins.
- Do not twist the lamp hard; the locating pins can crack.
- Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 4: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Look at the back of the tail light assembly and find the tail/stop bulb socket.
- Use your hand to rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- If needed, use the clean nitrile gloves to grip the socket securely.
Step 5: Replace the Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Use the microfiber cloth to hold the new bulb if you are not wearing gloves.
- Push the new rear tail/stop light bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not force it at an angle.
Step 6: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb socket back into the tail light housing.
- Use your hand to rotate the socket clockwise until it locks.
- Make sure the socket is seated evenly to help keep water out of the lamp.
Step 7: Test the New Bulb Before Reinstalling the Lamp
- With the lamp still supported, turn the headlamp switch to Parking Lamps.
- Press the brake pedal or have a helper press it.
- Confirm the new bulb works for tail light and brake light functions.
- Turn the headlamp switch back to Off before continuing.
Step 8: Reinstall the Tail Light Assembly
- Align the tail light guide pins with the body openings.
- Use both hands to press the lamp straight forward into place.
- Make sure the lamp sits flush with the body panel.
- Use the T30 Torx screwdriver to reinstall the mounting screws.
- Tighten the screws snugly by hand; do not overtighten plastic lamp mounts.
Step 9: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the T30 Torx screwdriver to remove the screws on the opposite tail light.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool if the lamp needs gentle help releasing.
- Replace the second rear tail/stop light bulb the same way.
- Reinstall the second lamp and tighten the screws snugly by hand.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn on the parking lamps and verify both rear tail lights work.
- ✅ Press the brake pedal and verify both brake lights brighten correctly.
- ✅ Turn on the hazard lights to make sure no connector was disturbed.
- ✅ Check that both tail light housings sit flush and do not wiggle.
- ✅ If a “bulb out” warning remains, recheck that the bulb is fully seated in the socket.
