🔧 Corolla - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll access the back of each taillight from inside the trunk, twist the bulb sockets out, and swap the bulbs. Replacing both sides is the same process, so you’ll do the steps twice (left and right).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before touching any bulbs.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot after driving.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the taillight when loosening nuts so it doesn’t fall or scratch paint.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
- Tip: Keep track of clips in a small cup.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the trunk and expose the taillight access area
- Use a flashlight to find the trunk-side trim panel behind the taillight.
- Remove any plastic clips using a trim clip removal tool.
- If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (pry carefully so you don’t tear the trim).
Step 2: Identify the bulb socket you’re replacing
- Locate the bulb sockets on the back of the taillight assembly.
- Common sockets you’ll see:
- Stop/Tail bulb (brake light + running light in one bulb)
- Turn signal bulb (usually the amber blinking bulb)
- Tip: Turn on parking lights to confirm tail bulb.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise by hand until it unlocks.
- Pull the socket straight out.
- Socket = the plastic holder the bulb twists into.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb and install the new bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if it’s tight) using nitrile gloves.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- If using it, apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test the light
- Insert the socket back into the taillight and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Turn the ignition ON as needed and test:
- Tail/running lights
- Brake lights (press brake pedal)
- Turn signals / hazards
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket again and make sure the bulb is fully pushed in.
Step 6: If you can’t access the socket, remove the taillight assembly (only if needed)
- Remove the trunk trim more fully if it blocks access using a trim clip removal tool.
- Remove the taillight retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
- Carefully pull the taillight straight back to release the locating pins.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs) when reinstalling the taillight nuts (snug, not overtight).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-6 for the opposite taillight.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.
âś… After Repair
- Verify all rear lights work: tail lights, brake lights, left/right turn signals, and hazards.
- Reinstall all trunk trim panels and clips (press clips in straight).
- Make sure the trunk weatherstrip sits flat so water can’t leak in.
