🔧 Tucson - Tail Light Bulb Replacement
Replacing both tail light bulbs on your Tucson is a beginner-friendly job. You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assemblies, replace the bulbs, then test the lights before driving.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the vehicle off and remove the key before working on the lights.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on; bulbs can get hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of new bulbs with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Use gentle pressure when removing the lamp assembly so you do not crack the plastic locating pins.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.
🔧 Required Tools

- 10mm socket

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear tail light bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small tube
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Tucson on level ground and shift to Park.
- Set the parking brake.
- Turn all exterior lights off.
- Open the liftgate for access to the rear lamp mounting screws.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive moisture barrier used lightly on bulb seals and electrical connectors.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the liftgate and locate the lamp screws
- Open the liftgate fully.
- Look at the inner edge of each rear tail lamp assembly, next to the liftgate opening.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket, depending on the fastener style fitted, to remove the visible lamp mounting screws/bolts.
- Set the screws aside in a safe place.
- Use a cup for small screws.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Hold the outside edge of the lamp with both hands.
- Pull the lamp assembly straight rearward from the vehicle.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool carefully at the outer edge to help release the locating pins.
- Do not twist the lamp sideways. The plastic guide pins can break.
- No torque spec applies during removal.
Step 3: Identify the tail light bulb socket
- Look at the back of the removed lamp assembly.
- The tail light/brake light bulb socket is the larger twist-lock socket in the rear lamp housing.
- A twist-lock socket is a bulb holder that turns slightly to lock or unlock from the lamp housing.
- Use your gloved hand to turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to grip the old bulb.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket if it is a wedge-style bulb.
- If your bulb has small metal side pins, push it in slightly and turn counterclockwise to release it.
- Do not squeeze the glass hard. Broken glass can cut you.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new rear tail light bulb.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the rubber seal area only, if present.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- If it is a pin-style bulb, align the pins, push in, and turn clockwise until it locks.
- Do not touch bulb glass.
Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket
- Insert the bulb socket back into the lamp housing.
- Use your gloved hand to turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
- Make sure the socket sits flat and snug against the housing seal.
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- Line up the lamp locating pins with the holes in the body.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it seats evenly.
- Install the mounting screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket with 1/4-inch ratchet to tighten the screws.
- Torque to 3-4 Nm (27-35 in-lbs) if using a torque tool; otherwise snug only, do not overtighten.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1 through 7 on the opposite rear tail lamp assembly.
- Replace both bulbs even if only one failed, because they usually age at the same rate.
Step 9: Test the lights
- Close the liftgate enough that it will not block your view, but do not slam it yet.
- Turn the parking lights on and verify both tail lights illuminate.
- Press the brake pedal and verify both brake lights brighten.
- Use a helper if available, or back up near a wall so you can see the reflection.
- If a bulb does not work, turn the lights off and recheck that the bulb and socket are fully seated.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both tail lights and brake lights work before driving.
- ✅ Make sure both lamp assemblies sit flush with the body.
- ✅ Check that the liftgate closes normally and does not contact the lamps.
- ✅ No scan tool, coding, or infotainment reset is needed for this repair.
