🔧 Camry - Tail Light Bulb Replacement

You can replace the rear tail light bulbs from inside the trunk without removing the bumper. The main job is opening the trunk trim access, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin so lights don’t come on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Hybrid note: this job is in the trunk area and does not expose high-voltage components; no battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/brake light bulb (match the bulb number on your old bulb) - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb (match the bulb number on your old bulb) - Qty: 2 (optional)
  • Rear reverse light bulb (match the bulb number on your old bulb) - Qty: 2 (optional)
  • Trunk trim panel clips - Qty: 2-6 (optional, if any break)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and keep a flashlight handy so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
  • Have your replacement bulbs ready, but don’t open the package until you’re ready to install.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which rear bulb you’re replacing

  • Turn the tail lights on (headlight switch ON) and check which side is out, then turn them back OFF.
  • If you’re unsure whether it’s the tail light (running light) or brake light, have a helper press the brake while you look from behind.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.

Step 2: Open the trunk and remove the trunk side access cover

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • On the left or right trunk lining behind the tail lamp area, locate the small access door/cover.
  • If clips are present, use a trim clip removal tool to pop them out (this tool is a flat fork that lifts plastic clips without breaking them).

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly (if needed for your bulb location)

  • Some bulb sockets can be reached through the access door; if you can’t comfortably twist the socket out, remove the lamp.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
  • Support the lamp with one hand and gently pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • If it feels stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver carefully on the trunk trim edge only—do not pry on the painted body.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Identify the correct socket (tail/brake is typically a dual-function socket in the main tail lamp).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to verify you’re on the correct socket before pulling the bulb.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (some types may require a slight wiggle).
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Do not touch bulb glass; if you do, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry.
  • Compare the bulb number printed on the old bulb base to ensure you installed the same type.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Reinsert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • If you removed the lamp, align the pins and press the lamp straight into place.
  • Install the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (inch-pound).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Move to the opposite trunk side and repeat Steps 2 through 6.
  • Doing both sides prevents uneven color/brightness.

Step 8: Reinstall trunk trim/access covers

  • Reinstall the access cover and any clips by hand.
  • If a clip won’t hold, replace it rather than forcing it.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the tail lights ON and verify both sides illuminate evenly.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights are bright and steady.
  • Turn on hazards/turn signals to confirm you didn’t disturb another socket.
  • If a new bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse and the bulb socket contacts (corrosion/heat damage).
