🔧 Expedition - Tail Light Bulb Replacement

On your Expedition, the tail lamp assembly has to be loosened and pulled outward so you can access the bulb sockets from the back. You’ll replace the bulb(s) in the left and right tail lamps, then test all rear lighting functions.

Quick check before you start (2 questions): Are you replacing the brake/turn bulbs on both sides, or a different bulb (reverse/parking)? And do your tail lamps have LEDs (no replaceable bulbs) or do they use twist-out bulb sockets?

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch a new halogen bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t scratch paint or drop.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Torque wrench (in-lb)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Tail light bulb(s) - Replace left & right to match - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn all exterior lights OFF.
  • Open the liftgate so you can access the tail lamp fasteners at the body opening.
  • Match bulb type to the old bulb.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • At the inboard edge of the tail lamp (near the liftgate opening), locate the retaining fasteners.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining fasteners

  • Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension to remove the fasteners.
  • Set the fasteners aside where they won’t get lost.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp outward

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently start the lamp loose if it feels stuck.
  • Pull the tail lamp straight back (away from the body). Do not pry against painted surfaces.
  • Support the lamp with your hand so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket you’re replacing

  • From the back of the tail lamp, locate the socket for the failed bulb.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
  • If there is an electrical connector instead of a removable socket, you likely have an LED tail lamp and the bulb is not serviceable separately (the assembly is replaced).

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves (or hold the bulb with a clean shop towel).
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the socket seal area if it looks dry.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body grommets, then press the lamp straight in until fully seated.
  • Reinstall the fasteners using an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Torque to 22 in-lbs (2.5 Nm) using a torque wrench (in-lb).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–6 on the opposite tail lamp to replace the other bulb.
  • Replace in pairs for even brightness/color.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • If a bulb still doesn’t work, re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
  • If you have LED tail lamps and a function is out, the fix is typically tail lamp assembly replacement and possibly a scan for lighting faults.
