šŸ”§ Pilot - Side View Mirror Replacement (Both Sides)

You’ll remove the inside door trim panel, unplug the mirror wiring, unbolt the mirror, and install the new mirror assemblies. The key is working carefully around the door wiring and the side airbag area inside the door.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.0-3.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the 12V battery before removing door panels to reduce airbag risk.
  • āš ļø Wait at least 3 minutes after battery disconnect before working near the door airbag area.
  • āš ļø Support the mirror when removing nuts so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
  • āš ļø Use plastic trim tools to avoid cracking trim and scratching paint.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low Nm range)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Panel clip pliers
  • Pick tool
  • Painters tape
  • Magnetic parts tray
  • Work light
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Left side view mirror assembly (driver side) - Qty: 1
  • Right side view mirror assembly (passenger side) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel retainer clips - Qty: 6-12
  • Mirror sail-panel retainer clips - Qty: 2-4

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Pilot on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lower both front windows so you can grab the door panel safely.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket, then wait at least 3 minutes.
  • If your right mirror has a camera (LaneWatch) or a blind-spot indicator icon in the glass, confirm your replacement mirrors match those features.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Protect paint and prep the work area

  • Apply painters tape along the door edge and near the mirror base to prevent scratches.
  • Set up a magnetic parts tray and work light.

Step 2: Remove the inner mirror ā€œsail panelā€ trim

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to pry off the small triangular trim piece at the front top corner of the door (inside, by the mirror).
  • If it has a tweeter speaker connector, unplug it using a pick tool to lift the lock tab gently.
  • Pry close to clips to avoid bending trim.

Step 3: Remove the front door trim panel (one door at a time)

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to pop off the small trim cover(s) hiding screws (commonly near the interior door handle area and/or armrest area).
  • Remove the exposed screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Use panel clip pliers and/or a plastic trim removal tool set to release the door panel clips around the edges.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window channel.
  • Disconnect the door switch connectors by hand; use a pick tool only if a lock tab is stuck.
  • If equipped, disconnect the courtesy light connector at the bottom of the door panel.
  • If clips stay in the door, move them back to panel.

Step 4: Unplug the mirror electrical connector

  • Locate the mirror harness connector near the upper front area of the door.
  • Press the lock tab and unplug it by hand; if tight, use a pick tool carefully.
  • Unclip any harness retainers using panel clip pliers so the wiring can move freely.
  • Don’t pull on wires—pull on the connector.

Step 5: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Support the mirror from the outside with one hand.
  • Remove the three mirror mounting nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Carefully guide the wiring and grommet through the door as you remove the mirror.

Step 6: Install the new mirror assembly

  • Feed the new mirror wiring and grommet through the door opening by hand.
  • Set the mirror onto the door studs while holding it aligned at the base.
  • Start all three nuts by hand first, then snug them with a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the nuts evenly using a torque wrench (in-lb or low Nm range): Torque to 9 NĀ·m (80 in-lb).
  • Even tightening helps the mirror sit flush.

Step 7: Reconnect wiring and reassemble the door

  • Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks.
  • Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors by hand.
  • Hang the door panel on the top window channel and press downward to seat it.
  • Press the perimeter clips back in place (use your palm, not a hammer).
  • Reinstall screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, then snap the trim covers back on.
  • Reinstall the sail panel by lining up clips and pressing it into place.

Step 8: Repeat Steps 2–7 for the other front door

  • Use the same tool/steps for the opposite side mirror.
  • If your passenger mirror has a camera or special indicator, confirm the connector matches before bolting it in.

āœ… After Repair

  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn ignition ON and test mirror functions: power adjust, heating (if equipped), turn signal (if equipped), and memory position (if equipped).
  • If the passenger mirror has a camera, test the camera view on the display and confirm the image is stable.
  • Check for wind noise on a short drive; re-check mirror seating if you hear whistling.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $600-$1,800 (parts + labor, both sides; higher if camera-equipped)

DIY Cost: $250-$1,200 (parts only, both sides depending on options)

You Save: $350-$600+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-2.5 hours.
