šŸ”§ RX350 - Taillight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)

On your RX350, the ā€œtaillightā€ area includes a few different lights. The most common replaceable bulbs are the rear turn signal and sometimes the reverse; the tail/brake light is typically LED and not a simple bulb replacement (it requires replacing the lamp assembly if it fails).

This guide shows how to replace the left + right rear turn signal bulbs, which is what most people mean by ā€œboth taillight bulbs.ā€

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and switch all exterior lights OFF before starting.
  • āš ļø Let the bulbs cool for 5-10 minutes; they can get hot.
  • āš ļø Wear gloves; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Support the liftgate securely if you’ll be working near it.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim panel removal tool (plastic)
  • Small flathead screwdriver

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440A amber) - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to P.
  • Open the rear liftgate and remove cargo so you can access the side panels.
  • Do a quick check: turn on hazards and confirm which side(s) are out, then turn everything OFF.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the access door in the cargo area (left side)

  • Use a flashlight to locate the small access panel/door behind the taillight area on the left side of the cargo trim.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool (plastic) to gently pop the access door open.
  • If there’s a tight clip, use a small flathead screwdriver carefully and pry a little at a time. Go slow to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket (left side)

  • Reach through the access opening and find the bulb socket for the turn signal.
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle while pulling—don’t yank on the wires.

Step 3: Replace the bulb (left side)

  • Wear nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new 7440A amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and test (left side)

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and rotate it clockwise to lock.
  • Turn the ignition ON and turn on the left turn signal to confirm it flashes normally.
  • Turn the ignition OFF after the test.

Step 5: Repeat on the right side

  • Move to the right cargo-side access panel and use the same process with the trim panel removal tool (plastic).
  • Remove the socket by turning counterclockwise, replace the bulb, then reinstall by turning clockwise.
  • Test the right turn signal to confirm normal flash speed.

Step 6: Refit the access doors

  • Snap the access panels/doors back into place by pressing evenly with your hands.
  • Make sure the trim sits flush and nothing is pinched.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn on hazards and walk around to confirm both rear turn signals flash evenly.
  • If the new bulb still doesn’t work, the socket may not be fully locked—remove and reinstall it.
  • If your tail/brake light is out (not the blinking turn signal), it’s usually an LED lamp assembly issue, not a bulb.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$30 (parts only)

You Save: $50-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.

Quick check (2 questions so I can match this exactly):

  • Which light is out: turn signal, reverse, or brake/tail?
  • Is it the outer lamp on the body, or the inner lamp on the liftgate?
