🔧 RAV4 - Radiator Hose Replacement

Replacing both radiator hoses means draining the coolant, removing the old upper and lower hoses, and installing new hoses with fresh clamps if needed. This restores proper coolant flow and helps prevent overheating and leaks.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • Use a drain pan and keep coolant off the ground. Coolant is toxic to people and animals.
  • Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • Keep dirt out of the radiator neck, hose ends, and coolant passages.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Metric socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Pliers
  • Hose clamp pliers (specialty)
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Coolant spill-free funnel kit (specialty)
  • Shop towels
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

  • Upper radiator hose - Qty: 1
  • Lower radiator hose - Qty: 1
  • Radiator hose clamps - Qty: 4
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant - Qty: 1-2 gallons

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Have a drain pan ready before opening the cooling system.
  • Label hose positions before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Open the radiator drain cock and catch the coolant in a drain pan.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or pliers if the drain cock is stiff.
  • Drain enough coolant so the level is below both hose connections.

Step 2: Remove the upper radiator hose

  • Use hose clamp pliers to release the upper hose clamp.
  • Twist the hose gently to break it loose, then pull it off the radiator neck and engine fitting.
  • Inspect the hose nipples for cracks or corrosion.

Step 3: Remove the lower radiator hose

  • Use hose clamp pliers to release the lower hose clamp.
  • Use a ratchet and extension bar if nearby components block access.
  • Twist the hose gently, then remove it from the radiator and engine side.
  • Work slowly to avoid damaging the plastic radiator neck.

Step 4: Install the new upper hose

  • Compare the new hose to the old one to confirm shape and length.
  • Slide the clamp onto the hose first, then push the hose fully onto both fittings.
  • Position the clamp in the same spot as the original.

Step 5: Install the new lower hose

  • Repeat the same process with the lower hose.
  • Make sure the hose is fully seated on both ends before tightening the clamp.
  • If using spring clamps, place them directly over the hose bead.

Step 6: Refill the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain cock.
  • Use a funnel or spill-free funnel kit to refill with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant.
  • Fill the radiator and reservoir to the proper level.

Step 7: Bleed air from the system

  • Start the engine with the heater set to hot and the blower on low.
  • Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level.
  • Add coolant as the level drops.
  • When the thermostat opens, check for steady heat from the vents and top off again.

Step 8: Check for leaks

  • Use a flashlight to inspect both hose ends, clamps, and the radiator drain area.
  • Look for dripping coolant while the engine is warm and running.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck the coolant reservoir after a cool-down period.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the vehicle and monitor engine temperature.
  • Check the coolant level again after the next heat cycle.
  • Reinspect both hose clamps for seepage.
  • If the coolant looks rusty or contaminated, consider a full coolant flush.
