🔧 Oxygen Sensor - Replacement

On your Tacoma, you’ll replace both oxygen sensors on the exhaust. The upstream sensor is before the catalytic converter, and the downstream sensor is after it. This repair is straightforward, but the sensors can be tight from heat and corrosion.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • The exhaust gets extremely hot. Let it cool fully before starting.
  • Raise the vehicle securely on jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want to prevent accidental shorting while unplugging sensors.
  • Use care around the exhaust harness and clips. Do not twist the wiring.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 22mm oxygen sensor socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Penetrating oil
  • Trim clip tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Upstream oxygen sensor - Qty: 1
  • Downstream oxygen sensor - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Let the exhaust cool completely.
  • If needed, disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Raise the front of the Tacoma and support it with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate both sensors

  • Find the upstream sensor on the exhaust pipe before the catalytic converter.
  • Find the downstream sensor on the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter.
  • Trace each sensor wire to its electrical connector.

Step 2: Unplug the sensor connectors

  • Use a trim clip tool to release any wire retainers from the brackets.
  • Press the connector lock tabs and unplug both sensors.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 3: Loosen the sensors

  • Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads if they are rusty.
  • Use a 22mm oxygen sensor socket and breaker bar to break each sensor loose.
  • Turn counterclockwise to remove.
  • Work the sensor back and forth if it is stuck.

Step 4: Remove the old sensors

  • Once loose, remove each sensor by hand.
  • Compare the old sensors to the new ones to make sure they match.

Step 5: Install the new sensors

  • Thread each new sensor in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket to snug them down.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect the wiring

  • Plug both connectors back in until they click.
  • Reinstall any wire clips into the original brackets.
  • Make sure the wires are routed away from the exhaust.

Step 7: Lower the truck and verify

  • Remove the jack stands and lower the Tacoma.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable if disconnected.
  • Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks or warning lights.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the Tacoma for a short trip so the engine computer can relearn sensor operation.
  • If the check engine light stays on, scan for codes and clear them.
  • Recheck the sensor wiring after the test drive.
