How to Replace Both Low Beam Headlight Bulbs on a 2017 Nissan Rogue
Step-by-step DIY bulb replacement with tools, parts list, torque specs, safety tips, and post-repair checks

🔧 Rogue - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the low-beam headlight bulbs on both sides of your Rogue. This is done from inside the engine bay by accessing the back of each headlamp and swapping the bulbs.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸Always switch the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key or turn the ignition OFF before touching any wiring.
- 🔸Let the engine bay cool down if you recently drove; parts near the engine can be hot.
- 🔸Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers; oils can cause the bulb to burn out early.
- 🔸This is a hybrid, but you are only working near the 12V lighting; you do not need to disconnect the hybrid battery.
- 🔸If you choose to disconnect the 12V battery, always remove the negative (-) terminal first using a wrench.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔸10mm socket
- 🔸1/4" drive ratchet
- 🔸3" socket extension
- 🔸Flathead screwdriver (small)
- 🔸Mechanic gloves
- 🔸Safety glasses
- 🔸Clean lint-free cloth
- 🔸Isopropyl alcohol wipes

- 🔸Dielectric grease (for electrical contacts) - Qty: 1 small tube
- 🔸Disposable gloves - Qty: 1 pack
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🔸Park the Rogue on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the engine OFF.
- 🔸Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key or press the start/stop button to full OFF.
- 🔸Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- 🔸If you want extra safety, disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal with a 10mm socket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the low beam bulb locations
- 🔸Stand in front of the Rogue and look at one headlight; the low beam is the main bulb toward the outer side of the housing.
- 🔸From inside the engine bay, look behind the headlight assembly; the low beam bulb is accessed through a round plastic cap or directly as a bulb with a connector going into it.
- 🔸On the driver side, access is behind the headlight near the battery; on the passenger side, access is behind the headlight near the windshield washer reservoir.
Step 2: Create space if needed
- 🔸If access is tight on the driver side, you may gently move any flexible air intake duct out of the way.
- 🔸Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove any small bolts holding plastic covers if they obstruct direct access. Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) when reinstalling.
- Only remove pieces you clearly see blocking access.
Step 3: Remove the headlight rear cover (if equipped)
- 🔸Some Rogues have a round plastic dust cover over the bulb.
- 🔸Grip the cover with your hand and turn it counterclockwise (left) to unlock, then pull it off.
- 🔸If the cover has small tabs, you can gently help with a flathead screwdriver but do not pry hard to avoid cracking the plastic.
Step 4: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- 🔸Put on your mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
- 🔸Locate the back of the bulb; you’ll see a plastic connector plugged into it.
- 🔸Press the locking tab on the connector with your thumb and pull the connector straight back from the bulb.
- 🔸If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling; do not yank on the wires themselves.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- 🔸Grip the bulb base (the plastic part) firmly.
- 🔸Turn the bulb counterclockwise (left) about a quarter turn to unlock it from the headlight housing.
- 🔸Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
- Look at orientation; you’ll match this with the new bulb.
Step 6: Prepare the new bulb
- 🔸Open the new H11 halogen bulb package carefully so you don’t touch the glass.
- 🔸Hold the new bulb only by the plastic base.
- 🔸If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with an isopropyl alcohol wipe and dry with a clean lint-free cloth.
- 🔸Apply a very thin film of dielectric grease inside the connector terminals, not on the bulb pins themselves.
Step 7: Install the new bulb
- 🔸Align the tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight housing opening.
- 🔸Insert the bulb straight in until fully seated.
- 🔸Turn the bulb clockwise (right) about a quarter turn until it stops; this locks it in place.
- If it doesn’t turn, remove and realign the tabs.
Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connector
- 🔸Take the headlight connector and line it up with the bulb terminals.
- 🔸Push the connector straight on until you feel or hear a click from the locking tab.
- 🔸Gently tug the connector to be sure it’s fully seated and won’t pull off easily.
Step 9: Reinstall the rear cover and any removed parts
- 🔸If your headlight has a dust cover, position it over the opening and turn it clockwise to lock.
- 🔸Reinstall any plastic air duct or cover you removed earlier.
- 🔸Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and 3" extension to reinstall bolts, then snug them to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
Step 10: Repeat on the other side
- 🔸Repeat Steps 3–9 on the opposite headlight so both low beams are new and match in brightness and color.
- Changing bulbs in pairs keeps light output even.
Step 11: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)
- 🔸If you removed the 12V negative terminal, place it back on the battery post.
- 🔸Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the clamp bolt just snug; do not overtighten. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- 🔸Start the Rogue or turn the ignition to ON, then switch the headlights to ON.
- 🔸Check that both low beams light up and are similar in brightness and color.
- 🔸With the vehicle parked about 10–15 feet from a wall on level ground, confirm both beams are roughly the same height and pattern.
- 🔸Take a short night drive to confirm visibility and that there is no flickering.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $80–$150 (parts + labor for both low beams)
DIY Cost: $20–$60 (parts only, depending on bulb type/brand)
You Save: $60–$90 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3–0.5 hours.
