🔧 Camry - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)

You’ll replace the left and right low-beam headlight bulbs. The key is picking the correct bulb type (Halogen vs HID) and avoiding touching the new bulb’s glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get extremely hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If your Camry has HID/Xenon low beams, do not unplug or power the system while ON (high voltage).
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect hands/eyes in tight spaces.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for halogen bulbs; for HID, keep the car OFF and key away.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim clip remover
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low-beam headlight bulb (Halogen type, usually H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Low-beam headlight bulb (HID/Xenon type, usually D4S) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Fender liner push clips - Qty: 2-6

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (gives more room).
  • Identify your low-beam type:
    • Halogen: usually a simple 2-wire plug directly on the bulb.
    • HID/Xenon: usually a projector lens and a larger igniter/base on the bulb.
  • Tip: Replace both sides together for matching color.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Make room to access the back of the headlight

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • If access is too tight, lift the front corner you’re working on using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Use a plastic trim clip remover and Phillips screwdriver to remove the front portion of the fender liner fasteners (only what’s needed to pull the liner back).
  • Peel the liner back to see the rear of the headlight housing.

Step 2: Remove the low-beam dust cover (if equipped)

  • Use your flashlight to locate the low-beam bulb area on the back of the headlight.
  • Remove the round dust cover by turning it counterclockwise by hand.
  • If it’s stuck, use nitrile gloves for grip—do not pry hard on the headlight housing.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb connector

  • Press the lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If the tab is hard to press, use needle-nose pliers gently (don’t crush the connector).

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Halogen (usually H11): Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • HID/Xenon (usually D4S): Turn the igniter/base counterclockwise to unlock, then carefully pull the bulb straight out.
  • Tip: Note the bulb’s “tab” position before removal.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (no fingerprints)

  • Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Halogen: Push in fully, then rotate clockwise to lock.
  • HID: Seat it fully, then rotate clockwise to lock.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry fully.

Step 6: Reconnect and re-seal

  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the dust cover by turning it clockwise until snug (hand tight).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Turn the steering wheel the opposite direction and repeat Steps 1-6 for the other headlight.
  • Use the plastic trim clip remover to reinstall any liner clips you removed.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the car and turn on low beams to confirm both sides work.
  • Check that both bulbs match in brightness/color.
  • If one side doesn’t turn on:
    • Turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully seated.
    • Re-check the bulb is fully locked in place.
  • Make sure the fender liner is secured so it won’t rub the tire.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹2,000-₹8,000 (parts + labor, depending on HID vs halogen)

DIY Cost: ₹800-₹6,000 (parts only)

You Save: ₹1,200-₹2,000+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
