🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

On your RAV4, the low-beam headlight bulbs are serviced from the engine bay. This job is straightforward, but space is tight on the passenger side, so take your time and avoid touching the glass on the new bulbs.

Assumption: replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool before starting.
  • Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Use gloves and safety glasses.
  • No battery disconnect is required.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully locked in place before testing.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and secure it fully.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the headlight bulbs

  • Open the hood and locate the back of each headlight housing.
  • On the RAV4, the bulb is reached from behind the headlamp assembly.
  • Use a flashlight to see the bulb clips.

Step 2: Remove the electrical connector

  • Press the locking tab on the bulb connector and pull it straight off the bulb.
  • If the connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body, not the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock it.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
  • Do not force the bulb.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Put on gloves and handle the new bulb by the base only.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same position as the old one.
  • Twist it clockwise until it locks.

Step 5: Reconnect power and repeat on the other side

  • Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
  • Repeat the same steps on the other side.
  • Replace both bulbs together for even brightness.

Step 6: Test the headlights

  • Turn the headlights on and verify both low beams work.
  • Check that the beam pattern looks even.
  • If one side does not light, unplug and reseat the connector.

✅ After Repair

  • Close the hood carefully.
  • Confirm both headlights work with low beams and high beams.
  • Check the bulbs again after a short drive to make sure they stay seated.
