🔧 Altima - Headlight Bulb Replacement
This replaces the two front headlight bulbs (left and right). Most Altima S models use halogen bulbs that twist-lock into the back of the headlight housing, so you usually do this from under the hood without removing the bumper.
Assumption: You mean the two low-beam headlight bulbs (one per side), typically H11 halogen.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let headlights cool first; bulbs get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep ignition OFF and lights OFF while unplugging connectors.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but you may disconnect the negative terminal if you’re worried about shorting a connector.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Trim clip removal tool

- Low-beam headlight bulb (H11 halogen) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- A “twist-lock bulb” turns to unlock from the housing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Create a little working room (as needed)
- On the passenger side, if access is tight, use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and extension to loosen/remove the air intake snorkel/duct fasteners (if equipped) and move it slightly aside.
- If there are push-clips, pop them up using a trim clip removal tool.
- Only move parts enough to reach the bulb.
Step 2: Locate the low-beam bulb at the back of the headlight
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly (from the engine bay).
- Find the bulb socket with an electrical connector plugged into it (rear of the housing).
Step 3: Unplug the electrical connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight back off the bulb base (wiggle gently if needed).
Step 4: Remove the old bulb (twist-lock)
- Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new H11 bulb into the housing (align the tabs so it seats fully).
- Rotate the bulb clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.
- If you touched the glass, clean with alcohol.
Step 6: Reconnect and secure
- Push the electrical connector back onto the bulb until it clicks.
- Reinstall anything you moved (air duct/snorkel, clips, bolts) using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and extension.
- If you removed any 10mm bolts, snug them firmly (no high torque needed for small plastic duct hardware).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same bulb replacement steps for the opposite headlight.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
- Check the bulbs look equally bright and aimed similarly.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully seated and the bulb is fully twist-locked.
