🔧 Corolla - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs from behind each headlight housing in the engine bay. The main goals are safe access, correct bulb installation, and avoiding oil on the bulb glass (oil can shorten bulb life).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: You’re replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs (left + right).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let headlights cool fully before touching bulbs or housings.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can cause early failure).
- ⚠️ Keep the ignition OFF and headlight switch OFF while working.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, use a 10mm wrench and remove the negative (-) terminal first.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key (or keep the fob away from the car).
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlight housing.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Create access room (driver side)
- On the driver side, access can be tight near the air intake/air box.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to lift any push-clips holding the intake snorkel (plastic duct) if it blocks your hand.
- If needed, loosen/remove air intake/air box fasteners using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6" extension.
- When reinstalling air box/duct bolts, Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
Step 2: Remove the old bulb (one side at a time)
- Reach behind the headlight housing and locate the low-beam bulb socket (the bulb has an electrical connector plugged into it).
- Use nitrile gloves and press the connector lock tab, then pull the connector straight off.
- Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock, then pull the bulb straight out.
- Tip: Don’t force it—wiggle gently.
Step 3: Install the new bulb correctly
- Put on nitrile gloves (if not already). Avoid touching the glass.
- Insert the new H11 bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one (tabs must line up).
- Rotate the bulb clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks firmly.
- Plug the electrical connector back on until it clicks.
- If you accidentally touched the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry lint-free cloth (or replace the bulb if heavily contaminated).
Step 4: Repeat on the other headlight
- Move to the other side and repeat Step 2 and Step 3.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the connector is fully seated and the bulb is fully locked.
Step 5: Reinstall any removed intake/air box parts
- Reinstall any snorkel/air box pieces you moved using the 10mm socket, ratchet, and trim clip removal tool.
- Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs) for any 10mm air box/duct bolts you removed.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams illuminate.
- Check the beam pattern against a wall at night—both sides should look even (no obvious “dark” side).
- If a new bulb doesn’t work, turn lights OFF and recheck the connector is fully clicked in and the bulb is locked.
