🔧 CR-V - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your CR-V, replacing the headlight bulbs is usually done from inside the engine bay (no bumper removal). You’ll swap the bulb on each side, making sure not to touch the new bulb’s glass so it lasts longer.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights OFF and let the bulbs cool 10-15 minutes (they get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Keep the ignition OFF and keys out while your hands are near wiring/fans.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and open the hood.
  • Put on nitrile gloves (they help you avoid touching the bulb glass).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing (low beam)

  • Use a flashlight and look behind each headlight assembly from the engine bay.
  • The low beam bulb is the one with a round twist-lock base and a wiring connector (this procedure is for H11 low beams).
  • If your high beams are out, tell me.

Step 2: Remove the electrical connector

  • Reach behind the headlight on one side.
  • Press the connector locking tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If the tab is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the tab while pulling (don’t pry hard).

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Grab the bulb base and twist it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
  • Use a paper towel to hold it if it’s dirty or hard to grip.

Step 4: Install the new bulb (do not touch the glass)

  • Put on nitrile gloves if you aren’t wearing them already.
  • Hold the new H11 bulb by the base only.
  • Line up the bulb’s tabs with the slots in the housing, insert it fully, then twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean paper towel before installing.

Step 5: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/locks.
  • Gently tug it to confirm it’s secure.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Do the same removal and install steps for the other headlight.
  • Replacing bulbs in pairs keeps brightness even.

Step 7: Test the headlights

  • Turn the headlight switch ON and confirm both low beams work.
  • If one doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector and bulb seating (it must fully twist-lock).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn headlights ON and verify left and right low beams are equally bright.
  • Check high beams and turn signals too (sometimes another bulb is also near end-of-life).
  • If the light pattern looks “off,” make sure the bulb is fully seated and locked.
