🔧 Pilot - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs from inside the engine bay. The key is to avoid touching the new bulb’s glass and to fully seat/lock the bulb so the beam pattern stays correct.
Assumption: “Headlight bulbs” = the two low-beam bulbs (most common). On your Pilot, these are typically H11 halogen.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights off and let the housings cool before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; oils from your skin can shorten halogen bulb life.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass. If you do, clean it with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
- ⚠️ Do not force connectors or twist the bulb with the wiring—hold the bulb base.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and shut the engine off.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and set your flashlight so you can clearly see behind each headlight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the headlight (one side at a time)
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear of the headlight housing behind the headlight lens.
- Look for a round rear cover and/or the bulb wiring connector going into the housing.
- Do one side first to avoid mixing parts.
Step 2: Remove the rear dust cover (if equipped)
- Grip the cover by hand and twist it counterclockwise, or pull it straight off (varies by housing).
- If a tab is stubborn, gently help it with a small flat trim tool—do not crack the cover.
Step 3: Unplug the bulb connector
- Hold the connector (not the wires) and pull it straight off the bulb base.
- If there’s a locking tab, press it with your thumb or a small flat trim tool, then pull.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Grab the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- Set the old bulb aside where it won’t roll or shatter.
Step 5: Install the new bulb (no touching glass)
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Align the bulb’s tabs with the matching slots in the housing, then insert it straight in.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks fully in place.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it using rubbing alcohol and a lint-free shop towel, then let it dry.
Step 6: Reconnect and re-seal
- Push the connector back onto the bulb until it’s fully seated.
- Reinstall the dust cover and make sure it seals all the way around (keeps moisture out).
Step 7: Repeat on the other headlight
- Repeat Steps 1–6 on the other side using the same tools.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and confirm both low beams work.
- Check that both bulbs are the same color and brightness.
- At night, verify the beam pattern looks even side-to-side (a crooked pattern can mean the bulb isn’t seated/locked).
- Make sure the rear dust covers are installed—moisture inside the headlight means the cover isn’t sealing.
