How to Replace Both High-Beam Headlight Bulbs on a 2018 Toyota RAV4
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing instructions for high-beam bulb replacement

🔧 RAV4 - Headlight Bulb Replacement (High Beams, Both Sides)
On your RAV4 SE, the high-beam bulbs are halogen and can be replaced individually on each side. The low-beam headlights are LED and built into the headlight assembly, so those are not simple bulb changes.
This guide shows you how to replace both high-beam bulbs (driver and passenger side) safely from under the hood.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the headlights.
- ⚠️ Let the engine bay cool if the vehicle was recently driven; components can be hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new halogen bulb with bare fingers; oil can make it burn out early.
- ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, hair, and jewelry away from moving parts in the engine bay.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required, but avoid shorting the bulb connector against metal.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🛠️ Safety glasses
- 🛠️ Mechanic gloves
- 🛠️ LED work light or flashlight
- 🛠️ Small flathead screwdriver 3mm
- 🛠️ Clean lint-free cloth
- 🛠️ Isopropyl alcohol wipes
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔩 High-beam headlight bulb (9005 halogen) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
- 🔩 Dielectric grease (for electrical connectors) - Qty: 1 small tube
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your RAV4 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch and ignition fully OFF.
- Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- Make sure you have enough light; use the work light so you can see behind the headlight housings.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the high-beam bulb locations
- Stand in front of the RAV4 and look down behind the headlight on the driver side from inside the engine bay.
- The high-beam bulb is the inner bulb on each headlight (closer to the center of the vehicle).
- From the back, you will see a round plastic socket with a 2-wire connector; that is your high-beam bulb.
Step 2: Access the driver-side high-beam bulb
- Use the LED work light to illuminate the space behind the driver-side headlight.
- On the driver side, you will work between the battery and the headlight; space is tight but no parts need to be removed.
- If any small plastic cover is in the way, gently release its clips with the small flathead screwdriver 3mm and move it aside, noting how it clips back in.
Step 3: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Grasp the plastic connector on the back of the high-beam bulb (do not pull on the wires).
- Press down on the small locking tab with your thumb or the tip of the small flathead screwdriver 3mm.
- While holding the tab, pull the connector straight back to disconnect it from the bulb.
- Wiggle gently if it feels stuck.
Step 4: Remove the old high-beam bulb
- Hold the back of the bulb socket firmly with one hand.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock it from the headlight housing.
- Carefully pull the bulb straight out of the housing; avoid bumping the reflector inside the headlight.
- Set the old bulb aside where it cannot roll off or break.
Step 5: Prepare the new bulb
- Put on your mechanic gloves or use the clean lint-free cloth to handle the new bulb.
- Remove one new 9005 halogen bulb from its package, touching only the plastic base or metal part, not the glass.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it gently with an isopropyl alcohol wipe and let it dry completely.
- Apply a very small dab of dielectric grease to the rubber seal on the bulb base and to the connector terminals; this helps prevent corrosion.
Step 6: Install the new driver-side high-beam bulb
- Align the three small tabs on the bulb base with the matching slots in the headlight housing.
- Gently insert the bulb straight into the opening; do not force it.
- Once seated, rotate the bulb clockwise about a quarter turn until it stops firmly.
- If it will not turn, remove and realign tabs.
Step 7: Reconnect the electrical connector (driver side)
- Take the wiring connector and align it with the terminals on the back of the new bulb.
- Push the connector straight on until you hear or feel a click from the locking tab.
- Gently tug on the connector to confirm it is fully locked in place.
Step 8: Repeat removal and installation on the passenger side
- Move to the passenger side and set up your LED work light behind the headlight.
- Access the inner (high-beam) bulb from the engine bay; there is more room on this side.
- Repeat Steps 3–7 on the passenger side:
- Disconnect the connector using your fingers or the small flathead screwdriver 3mm on the tab.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise and remove it.
- Prepare the second new bulb using the clean lint-free cloth or gloves.
- Insert and turn the bulb clockwise until it locks.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall any covers and check for secure fit
- If you removed any small plastic covers or panels, reinstall them now by snapping them back onto their clips by hand.
- Look at the back of each headlight and make sure:
- Each bulb base is fully seated and turned to the locked position.
- Each connector is fully pushed in and secure.
Step 10: Test the high beams
- Close the hood loosely (do not slam yet) in case you need to adjust anything.
- Turn the ignition to ON and switch the headlights on, then activate the high beams using the stalk on the steering column.
- Check from the front:
- Both high-beam lights should be bright and steady.
- No flickering or one-side-only lighting.
- Turn everything off again and fully close the hood.
✅ After Repair
- Test the high beams again at night on a safe, level road or against a wall to confirm they aim evenly left and right.
- If one side does not light, recheck the connector on that bulb and ensure it is locked and the bulb is fully turned into place.
- Dispose of old halogen bulbs properly; do not throw them where they can shatter and cause cuts.
- Remember: your low-beam LEDs are not serviceable bulbs; if they fail, the whole headlamp assembly typically needs replacement.
