🔧 Grand Cherokee - Headlight Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces both front low-beam headlight bulbs on your Grand Cherokee. The High Altitude trim uses HID headlamps, so the bulbs operate at very high voltage and must be handled carefully.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ HID headlights can produce high voltage. Make sure the headlight switch is OFF and keep your hands away from the bulb connector while the system is powered.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging HID bulb connectors.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes before touching the headlamp area.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new HID bulbs. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Replace both bulbs as a pair so the color and brightness match.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses. HID bulbs are pressurized glass capsules.

- 10mm socket
- 1/4-inch ratchet

- HID headlight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small tube
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground with the wheels straight.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and let the headlamp area cool for at least 10 minutes.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable, then move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
- A trim removal tool is a small plastic pry tool that helps remove clips without scratching panels.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease used lightly around electrical seals to help keep moisture out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Headlight Access Covers
- Use the hood release inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it.
- Use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp housing.
- Find the round rear access cover on the back of each headlight assembly.
- Work one side at a time.
Step 2: Improve Access Behind the Driver-Side Headlamp
- Use a flat trim removal tool to gently move any flexible plastic splash shield or air ducting that blocks your hand access.
- If a push-pin clip is in the way, use the flat trim removal tool to lift the center pin, then pull the clip out.
- Set all clips aside where they will not fall into the engine bay.
Step 3: Remove the Driver-Side Rear Headlamp Cover
- Put on clean nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Use your hand to rotate the round rear cover counterclockwise.
- Pull the cover straight rearward and set it aside.
- If the cover is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the raised tabs only. Do not crack the cover.
Step 4: Disconnect the Driver-Side HID Bulb Connector
- Use a flashlight to inspect the connector on the rear of the HID bulb.
- Release the connector lock by hand, then pull the connector straight back from the bulb.
- Do not twist the wiring harness. Pull only on the connector body.
- Never pull on the wires.
Step 5: Remove the Driver-Side HID Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the HID bulb retainer counterclockwise until it unlocks.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
- Keep the old bulb upright and avoid bumping the glass against the housing.
Step 6: Install the New Driver-Side HID Bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves before handling the new HID bulb.
- Line up the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlamp housing.
- Push the bulb straight into place without touching the glass.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise by hand until it locks firmly.
- No bolt torque is used for the bulb because it locks by hand with a twist-lock retainer.
Step 7: Reconnect the Driver-Side HID Connector
- Apply a very light film of dielectric grease around the rubber seal only, not on the metal terminals.
- Push the connector straight onto the bulb until it clicks or seats fully.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the connector is square and fully attached.
Step 8: Reinstall the Driver-Side Rear Headlamp Cover
- Inspect the cover seal to make sure it is clean and seated correctly.
- Install the cover by hand and rotate it clockwise until fully locked.
- The cover must seal tightly to keep moisture out of the headlamp.
Step 9: Repeat the Same Process on the Passenger-Side Headlamp
- Use the flashlight to locate the passenger-side rear headlamp cover.
- Remove any blocking push-pin clips with the flat trim removal tool if needed.
- Rotate the rear cover counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
- Disconnect the HID connector by hand.
- Rotate the old bulb counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
- Install the new bulb by hand and rotate it clockwise until locked.
- Reconnect the HID connector and reinstall the rear cover.
Step 10: Reinstall Any Removed Clips or Ducting
- Use your hands to reposition any splash shield or ducting that was moved.
- Use the flat trim removal tool to help align push-pin clips if needed.
- Push each clip back into place by hand until it sits flush.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal. It can crack or deform.
Step 12: Test the Headlights
- Turn the ignition to RUN or start the engine.
- Turn the headlight switch ON.
- Check that both low-beam HID bulbs turn on and remain steady.
- Turn the headlights OFF before making any adjustments or touching the headlamp area again.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both headlights are the same color and brightness after warming up for about 30 seconds.
- ✅ Check the headlamp covers again to make sure they are fully locked and sealed.
- ✅ If one bulb does not light, turn the lights OFF, disconnect the battery again with the 10mm socket, and recheck the connector seating.
- ✅ If the beam pattern looks too high or low, have the headlamp aim checked on a level surface.
- ✅ Dispose of old HID bulbs safely. Do not throw them where the glass can break and injure someone.
