How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2022 Toyota Tacoma
Step-by-step DIY guide to change 2022 Tacoma low and high beam bulbs with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing steps

🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the low- and high-beam headlight bulbs from behind the headlight assemblies under the hood. This mostly involves removing covers, unplugging the connectors, swapping bulbs, and reinstalling everything carefully without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🚨 Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the headlights.
- 🚨 Let the engine bay cool if you’ve been driving; parts can be hot.
- 🚨 Do not touch the glass part of halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can cause early failure.
- 🚨 Work in a well-lit area and keep small parts (caps, clips) in a tray so you don’t lose them.
- 🚨 Disconnect the negative battery cable if you feel unsure around electrical plugs. This is optional but safer for beginners.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park the Tacoma on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the headlights off.
- Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
- If you want maximum safety, use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal and tuck it aside.
- Make sure you have good lighting so you can clearly see behind the headlights.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm headlight type
- On your Tacoma TRD Off-Road, most trucks use halogen bulbs with removable dust caps behind the headlight. If you look behind the headlight and see twist-off caps and a standard bulb socket, you have halogens.
- If instead the housing looks sealed with a control box and no removable bulb holders, you may have factory LEDs, which usually require full assembly replacement, not just a bulb.
- Stop here and ask if your lights look sealed.
Step 2: Access the driver-side headlight
- Use the work light or flashlight to look behind the driver-side headlight from inside the engine bay.
- You will see round plastic covers (dust caps) on the back of the headlight assembly.
- If any plastic trim or rubber weather strip is in your way, gently pry the clips with the trim removal tool to gain more room.
Step 3: Remove the low-beam dust cap (driver side)
- Put on your nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grasp the round dust cap for the low beam and twist it counterclockwise by hand to release it.
- If it’s tight, use the flathead screwdriver very gently on the outer edge to help turn, but do not crack the cap.
- Set the cap aside somewhere clean so dirt does not get inside.
Step 4: Disconnect and remove the low-beam bulb (driver side)
- Look inside the opening; you’ll see the bulb with a plug on the back.
- Press the locking tab on the connector with your thumb and pull the connector straight off the bulb. If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling.
- Once unplugged, grasp the bulb base (not the glass) and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock it.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the housing and set it aside to compare with the new one.
Step 5: Install the new low-beam bulb (driver side)
- Take one new H11 low-beam bulb and keep the glass away from your fingers and any dirt. If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with the clean lint-free towel.
- Lightly coat the rubber seal on the bulb’s base with a tiny dab of dielectric grease to help seal and prevent moisture. Very thin smear is enough.
- Align the locking tabs on the bulb with the slots in the headlight housing and insert the bulb fully.
- Twist the bulb clockwise until it stops. It should feel snug and seated.
- Reconnect the wiring connector to the bulb until it clicks into place.
Step 6: Reinstall the low-beam dust cap (driver side)
- Inspect the dust cap seal for cracks; replace if damaged.
- Place the dust cap back over the opening and twist clockwise by hand until it stops.
- Make sure it’s fully sealed; this keeps moisture and dust out of the headlight.
Step 7: Replace the high-beam bulb (driver side)
- Locate the other round dust cap or direct socket for the high-beam bulb behind the same headlight. On many Tacomas, the high beam is closer to the center of the truck.
- Repeat the same process:
- Twist the dust cap counterclockwise (if present) and remove it.
- Press the connector tab and unplug it from the bulb.
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise and remove it.
- Install the new 9005 high-beam bulb, aligning tabs and twisting clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the wiring connector until it clicks.
- Reinstall the dust cap and twist clockwise to seal.
Step 8: Repeat low- and high-beam replacement on passenger side
- Move to the passenger side of the Tacoma.
- Access may be tighter around the washer bottle or air intake, but the steps are the same.
- Use the trim removal tool to gently move any plastic covers if needed for hand room.
- Repeat the same steps:
- Remove low-beam dust cap, unplug, twist out old bulb, install new H11 low beam, reconnect, reinstall dust cap.
- Remove high-beam dust cap, unplug, twist out old bulb, install new 9005 high beam, reconnect, reinstall dust cap.
Step 9: Reattach anything you moved and reconnect battery
- If you popped any trim clips, push them back into place by hand.
- If you disconnected the battery earlier, use the 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall and snug the negative battery terminal. Torque to 5 Nm (4 ft-lbs) is enough; just snug, not over-tight.
Step 10: Test the headlights
- Turn the ignition to ON and turn on the low beams.
- Walk to the front and confirm both low beams are lit and look similar in brightness and color.
- Switch to high beams and confirm both sides work.
- If any bulb is out, turn everything off and recheck your connector and bulb seating on that side.
âś… After Repair
- Check beam aim by parking about 3–5 meters from a wall at night and verifying both sides are even and not pointing extremely high. Simple aim checks are usually enough if you only changed bulbs.
- Make sure there is no condensation building up in the headlights after a short drive; if you see moisture, a dust cap may not be fully sealed.
- Dispose of old bulbs carefully; do not throw them hard because they can shatter.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $180-$260 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $50-$100 (parts only, all four bulbs)
You Save: $80-$210 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
