How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2021 Toyota Tacoma
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts, safety tips, and torque specs for low and high beam bulb replacement

🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the low and high beam headlight bulbs on your Tacoma. Access is from under the hood, behind each headlight, without removing the bumper.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ❗ Always switch the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key before working.
- ❗ Let the engine bay cool down; parts around the lights can be hot.
- ❗ Do not touch the glass part of new halogen bulbs with bare fingers; oil can make them burn out early.
- ❗ Keep loose clothing and tools away from the cooling fan area.
- ❗ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets and trip data.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Tacoma on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the headlight switch to OFF.
- 🔑 Remove the key from the ignition or switch the start button to OFF.
- 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but you may disconnect the negative terminal with a 10mm socket if you prefer extra safety.
- 💡 Open the hood and use the hood prop rod to secure it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify low beam vs high beam positions
- 🔦 Use the LED work light to look at the back of the driver-side headlight from inside the engine bay.
- The outer bulb socket is usually the low beam (H11). The inner bulb socket is the high beam (9005).
- Check both sides before removing anything.
Step 2: Gain access on driver side
- 🔧 If needed, remove the plastic air intake snorkel on top of the radiator by loosening its clips using the flat trim tool (plastic).
- 🔧 On some trucks there is a small plastic cover near the headlight you can gently lift with the flat trim tool (plastic) for more space.
- No parts need heavy force; if it feels stuck, re-check for clips.
Step 3: Remove driver-side low beam bulb
- 🧤 Put on mechanic gloves to protect your hands.
- Reach behind the low beam socket and hold the plastic base of the bulb, not the wires.
- Turn the bulb base about a quarter turn counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
- Pull the bulb straight back out of the headlight housing.
- Press the tab on the wiring connector with your thumb and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
Step 4: Install driver-side low beam bulb
- 🧴 If you accidentally touch the glass of the new bulb, clean it with the rubbing alcohol wipe and dry it with the clean lint-free towel.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the rubber seal of the bulb and the electrical terminals. This helps keep moisture out.
- Plug the truck’s wiring connector onto the new bulb until it clicks.
- Align the bulb tabs with the grooves in the headlight housing, insert the bulb straight in, and then turn it clockwise about a quarter turn to lock it.
- Do not force; back out and realign if it resists.
Step 5: Replace driver-side high beam bulb
- Repeat the same steps as for the low beam: twist the high beam bulb base counterclockwise, pull it out, disconnect the connector, connect it to the new bulb, insert, and twist clockwise to lock.
- Again, avoid touching the glass; use the rubbing alcohol wipe if needed.
Step 6: Gain access on passenger side
- 🔧 On the passenger side, you may need to move the windshield washer filler neck slightly to create space.
- Use the 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 1/4" drive 3" extension to remove the small 10mm bolt holding the washer neck bracket if it’s in the way. Lift the neck gently aside without disconnecting the hose.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) when reinstalling this bolt later with the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
Step 7: Replace passenger-side low beam bulb
- Follow the same process as on the driver side: twist old bulb counterclockwise, pull out, unplug, plug in new bulb, insert, twist clockwise to lock.
- Use dielectric grease sparingly on the seal and terminals again.
Step 8: Replace passenger-side high beam bulb
- Repeat the same removal and installation steps as for the other three bulbs.
- Keep wiring routed the same way as original so it doesn’t touch hot or moving parts.
Step 9: Reinstall any parts you moved
- 🔧 Re-install the washer filler neck bracket bolt on the passenger side using the 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 1/4" drive 3" extension. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- 🔧 Refit the air intake snorkel or any plastic covers you loosened, snapping them back into their clips by hand.
✅ After Repair
- 🔦 Turn the ignition on, then switch headlights to low beam and check both sides from in front of the truck.
- 🔦 Switch to high beam and verify both high beams work.
- 🚗 At night, check the beam pattern on a wall about 7–8 meters away to make sure both sides look even and not pointed too high.
- 🧹 Make sure no tools, rags, or packaging are left in the engine bay and that the hood is fully latched.
