Step-by-step bulb access check, tools/parts list, safety tips, and what to do if you have sealed LED headlights
🔧 Altima - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Altima, headlight “bulbs” can be either traditional halogen bulbs (replaceable from the back of the headlamp) or LED headlights (not a simple bulb swap). I need to confirm which headlight type you have so I can give you the exact steps and the correct parts.
Difficulty Level: Beginner (halogen) / Advanced (LED headlamp assembly) | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours (halogen) / 2-4 hours (LED assembly)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let the headlamp area cool before touching.
- ⚠️ Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil shortens bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, use a 10mm wrench and remove the negative cable first.
- ⚠️ If your headlights are LED, do not open the sealed headlamp housing.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 10mm wrench
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulb (exact type depends on your headlamp housing) - Qty: 2
- Headlamp assembly (left or right, if equipped with non-serviceable LED headlights) - Qty: 1-2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp for a round twist-off dust cap (this usually indicates a replaceable bulb).
- Please answer these so I give you the correct procedure and parts:
- ❓ Are you replacing the main low/high-beam headlight, or a different bulb like parking light/turn signal?
- ❓ When you look behind the headlamp, do you see a twist-off cap and a bulb socket, or does it look like a sealed LED unit with no bulb access?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the headlight type (replaceable bulb vs LED)
- Use a flashlight and look behind the headlamp for a plastic dust cap you can twist by hand.
- If you find a cap and a plug going to a removable socket, you likely have a replaceable bulb.
- If there’s no cap/socket access and the back looks sealed, you likely have LED headlights (no bulb to swap).
- Send a photo of the back of the headlamp.
Step 2: If you have a replaceable halogen bulb, remove the electrical connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Reach behind the headlamp and locate the bulb’s electrical connector.
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
Step 3: Remove the bulb (halogen)
- If there is a dust cap, remove it by twisting it counterclockwise by hand.
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
- Keep the bulb pointed outward so you don’t bump the glass.
Step 4: Install the new bulb (halogen)
- Without touching the glass, insert the new bulb into the headlamp in the same orientation.
- Twist the bulb clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Reinstall the dust cap by hand (if equipped) and make sure it seals evenly.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 5: If your headlights are LED (no bulb access), stop here
- If the headlamp is a sealed LED unit, the correct fix is usually replacing the headlamp assembly (or an LED module if serviceable on your specific unit).
- Reply with what bulb/function you’re replacing and a photo of the back of the headlamp, and I’ll give you the exact assembly/module replacement steps for your Altima.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and verify both sides work (low beam, high beam, and auto-headlight if equipped).
- Check that any dust caps are fully seated to prevent moisture inside the headlamp.
- If a new bulb doesn’t light, swap it side-to-side to confirm it’s not a connector or fuse issue.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$300 (halogen bulb replacement) / $1,200-$2,800 (LED headlamp assembly replacement)
DIY Cost: $30-$120 (bulbs only) / $800-$2,200 (assembly only)
You Save: $90-$180 (bulbs) / $400-$600 (assembly) by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours (bulbs) or 2-4 hours (assembly).
