🔧 Tucson - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Tucson, “headlight bulbs” usually means the low beams (and sometimes the high beams). If your Tucson has halogen headlamps, the bulbs can be replaced from behind the headlight housing. If it has factory LED headlamps, the “bulb” is typically not serviceable and the full headlamp assembly is replaced.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlight area cool before touching anything.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep tools away from the battery terminals.
  • ⚠️ If you remove the battery for access, disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Plastic trim clip tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (halogen, correct fit for your Tucson) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (halogen, correct fit for your Tucson) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlight.
  • Find the dust cover (a round plastic cap that seals the back of the headlight).
  • If the back of the headlight has no removable cover and you see large sealed modules and heat sinks, you may have LED headlamps (see Step 9).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulbs you’re replacing

  • Turn the headlights on (engine can be off), and check: low beams, high beams, and turn signals.
  • Turn everything OFF again before starting work.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.

Step 2: Make room behind the passenger-side headlight (if needed)

  • If access is tight, remove the intake snorkel/duct clips using a plastic trim clip tool.
  • Remove any 10mm bolts holding the duct using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.

Step 3: Make room behind the driver-side headlight (if needed)

  • If access is tight near the battery, remove the battery hold-down using a 12mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
  • If you must remove the battery, loosen the negative terminal clamp using a 10mm socket and move the cable aside so it can’t spring back.

Step 4: Remove the dust cover

  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Reach behind the headlight and twist the dust cover by hand counterclockwise to remove it (some covers pull off depending on style).
  • Set the cover somewhere clean so dirt doesn’t get inside it.

Step 5: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull straight back off the bulb.
  • If it’s stubborn, use a flashlight to find the tab and gently work it free by hand (avoid yanking the wires).

Step 6: Remove the old bulb

  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise (about a quarter-turn) and pull it straight out.
  • Compare the old bulb base to the new bulb base to confirm they match.

Step 7: Install the new bulb

  • Hold the new bulb by the base (not the glass). If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with rubbing alcohol and let it dry.
  • Line up the bulb tabs with the headlight housing slots, insert fully, then rotate clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the dust cover and repeat on the other side

  • Reinstall the dust cover and twist it clockwise to seal it.
  • Repeat Steps 2–8 for the other headlight.
  • If you removed the battery, reinstall the hold-down using a 12mm socket and snug it securely (no published torque needed for this step in normal DIY service).

Step 9: If your Tucson has factory LED headlamps

  • If there is no replaceable bulb socket (no twist-out bulb) and the back looks like a sealed LED module, the “bulb” is not serviceable.
  • In that case, the repair is typically headlamp assembly replacement (and sometimes aiming/calibration afterward).
  • If you want, tell me whether your light is Low beam or High beam and upload a photo of the back of the headlight, and I’ll confirm which setup you have.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and verify: low beams, high beams, and that both sides match in brightness and color.
  • Check that the dust covers are fully sealed to prevent moisture inside the headlight.
  • Take a short night drive and confirm the beam aim looks normal (not pointing too high).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depends on bulb type)

You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
