🔧 RAV4 - Headlight Bulb Replacement
This guide covers replacing both front low-beam headlight bulbs on your RAV4. On this model, the bulbs are accessed from behind the headlamp housing in the engine bay, so the job is straightforward once you know the access points.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- Let the bulbs cool fully before touching them; they get very hot.
- Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb with bare fingers. Oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
- If your replacement bulbs are HID or LED conversions, the procedure changes. This guide assumes factory-style halogen bulbs.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
- Open the hood and support it fully.
- Have both new bulbs ready so you can replace them one at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood and access the back of the headlight
- Open the hood and locate the rear side of each headlight housing.
- On some cars, you may need to move a few plastic retainers or remove a small cover for better access. Use the trim clip removal tool if needed.
- Work one side at a time.
Step 2: Remove the rear bulb cover
- Twist the rear dust cover counterclockwise by hand and remove it from the headlight housing.
- If it is tight, use a clean glove-covered hand for better grip.
- Set the cover aside where it stays clean.
Step 3: Disconnect the bulb connector
- Press the release tab on the bulb connector and pull it straight off the bulb.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull on the connector body only.
- A little wiggle helps if it is stuck.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
- Keep the bulb upright so you can compare the tab shape and seating position with the new one.
- Inspect the socket area for dirt or moisture.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlight housing and insert it straight in.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Do not force the bulb.
Step 6: Reinstall the dust cover
- Inspect the dust cover seal for damage or dirt.
- Install the cover and twist it clockwise until fully seated.
- Make sure the cover is sealed tightly to keep moisture out.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat the same steps for the other headlight bulb.
- Replace bulbs in pairs so light output stays even.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and confirm both low beams work.
- Check that both beams are aimed evenly on a wall or garage door.
- If one side does not light up, recheck the connector and bulb seating.
- If condensation appears inside the headlight later, inspect the rear cover seal.
