How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2018 Toyota Avalon (Low/High Beam)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with bulb-type check (halogen/HID/LED), tools, parts, and safety tips

🔧 Avalon - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
On your Avalon, headlight “bulbs” may be serviceable from behind the headlamp, or the headlights may be an LED unit that doesn’t use a replaceable bulb. The first step is confirming whether you’re replacing a removable bulb (common for halogen high beams) or an LED module (usually replaced as an assembly).
Quick check (two questions): Are you replacing low beams, high beams, or both? Also, what bulb code is printed on the old bulb base (example formats: H11 / 9005 / D4S)?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Let headlights cool fully before touching anything.
- Wear gloves—skin oils can shorten halogen bulb life.
- Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb; hold the base only.
- If your Avalon has an HID system, the igniter can hold high voltage—turn lights off and wait at least 5 minutes before unplugging anything.
- Battery disconnect is usually not required, but keep the headlight switch OFF and the key away from the car.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4")
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulb (match the bulb code printed on your old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
- Replacement plastic push-clips (engine splash/upper cover, if any break) - Qty: 2-6
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp for a round dust cover and a twist-lock bulb.
- Bulb-type check: If there’s no removable bulb/socket behind the headlamp (sealed module with large heat sink), your Avalon likely has a non-serviceable LED headlight unit.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which “bulb” you’re replacing
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear access area of the headlamp on the driver and passenger sides.
- Look for a twist-off dust cover and a 2-wire connector going to a removable bulb base.
- If you find a removable bulb, continue to Step 2.
- If you do not find a removable bulb, skip to Step 9.
Step 2: Make room to reach the back of the headlamp
- If access is tight, remove any small plastic covers or ducting in the way using a trim clip removal tool and/or small flathead screwdriver.
- If a bracket is blocking access, remove its bolts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4").
- Tip: Set clips/bolts in a cup.
Step 3: Remove the headlight dust cover (if equipped)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Twist the rear dust cap counterclockwise by hand and pull it off (some covers pull straight off).
Step 4: Unplug the bulb connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb using your hand (use a small flathead screwdriver gently only if the tab is stuck).
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not the bulb glass).
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- If it’s a twist-lock bulb: rotate the bulb base counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out.
- If it uses a retaining clip: release the clip by hand and swing it away, then pull the bulb out.
- Use a flashlight to note the bulb’s alignment tabs before removal.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (same orientation)
- Hold the new bulb by the base only (do not touch the glass).
- Align the tabs and insert the bulb fully, then lock it:
- Twist-lock style: rotate clockwise until it stops.
- Clip style: re-latch the retaining clip securely.
- Tip: If it won’t seat, tabs aren’t aligned.
Step 7: Reconnect and function-check
- Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
- Turn headlights on and verify the new bulb works (check both sides).
- If it doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector lock and bulb seating.
Step 8: Reinstall dust cover and any removed parts
- Reinstall the dust cover (hand-tight).
- Reinstall any ducts/covers and push-clips using a trim clip removal tool (to align) and your hand to press clips in.
- Reinstall any brackets removed using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4").
Step 9: If your Avalon has a non-serviceable LED headlight unit
- If there is no removable bulb behind the headlamp, the “bulb” isn’t replaceable separately.
- At that point the correct repair is typically replacing the headlight assembly (or LED driver/module if serviced separately).
- Reply with a photo of the back of your headlight (under the hood) and tell me whether it’s the low beam or high beam that’s out, and I’ll confirm the exact serviceable path for your Avalon.
âś… After Repair
- Verify both headlights work and match in color/brightness.
- Check that the dust covers are fully sealed to prevent moisture inside the headlamp.
- If you removed any intake ducting, confirm it’s clipped/bolted back in place and not rubbing the radiator fan area.
