How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek (H11 & 9005)
Step-by-step engine-bay bulb swap with tools list, parts info, safety tips, and final beam checks

🔧 Crosstrek - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Crosstrek, the headlight bulbs can be replaced from the engine bay by twisting the bulb socket out of the back of the headlight housing. Replacing both sides at the same time helps keep brightness and color even.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get very hot).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep keys out of the ignition to avoid lights turning on unexpectedly.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Trim clip remover

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the lights fully OFF.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can clearly see the bulb socket.
- Put on nitrile gloves; they help prevent touching the bulb glass.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing
- From behind the headlight housing, find the round bulb/socket you can twist out by hand.
- Most Base Crosstreks use H11 for low beams and 9005 for high beams.
- Low beam is usually the one that burns out.
Step 2: Create a little working room (if needed)
- If your hands don’t fit comfortably, remove a couple of nearby plastic push-clips using a trim clip remover and gently move the intake snorkel/cover aside (don’t force it).
- Use a flashlight to confirm you can reach the bulb socket straight-on.
Step 3: Disconnect the bulb connector
- Grip the wiring connector at the bulb (not the wires).
- Press the release tab and pull the connector off by hand. Use nitrile gloves for better grip.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Twist the bulb/socket counterclockwise (left) about a quarter-turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
- Use a flashlight to make sure the bulb comes out level and doesn’t snag.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the headlight housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Twist clockwise (right) until it locks/snugs into place (hand-tight only).
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with alcohol (not included) and let it dry before installing.
Step 6: Reconnect the connector
- Push the connector back onto the bulb until you feel/hear it click.
- Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–6 for the other headlight so both sides match in brightness.
- Reinstall any push-clips you removed using the trim clip remover.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides work on low beam.
- Switch to high beam to confirm you didn’t disturb that connector.
- Walk around the front and make sure both beams look even and steady (no flicker).
