🔧 Sportage - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Sportage, the bulb replacement procedure depends on which headlamp system you have (halogen vs HID/LED) and which bulb you’re replacing (low beam vs high beam). Some Sportage headlamps use LED modules that are not serviced as a “bulb” and require headlamp assembly replacement.
Difficulty Level: Beginner–Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let the headlamp cool before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers (oil can shorten bulb life). Use clean gloves.
- ⚠️ If your Sportage has HID (xenon): high voltage is present; keep ignition OFF and do not unplug the ballast with power on.
- ⚠️ If you must raise the vehicle or remove parts for access, support it with jack stands on level ground.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulb(s) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlamp housing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing
- Turn the lights on briefly to verify what’s out: low beam vs high beam vs turn signal/parking light, then turn them back OFF.
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp for a bulb label/marking on the housing or dust cap.
Step 2: Check if your headlamp is bulb-serviceable
- At the rear of the headlamp, look for a round removable dust cap and a plug going into it.
- If there is no removable cap and you see a sealed LED module/heat sink, your Sportage likely uses a non-serviceable LED unit (assembly-level repair).
Step 3: Create access (if needed)
- If your hands don’t fit, remove the intake duct / nearby covers using a 10mm socket and ratchet, and any push-clips using a trim clip removal tool.
- If access is still blocked, you may need to loosen the front portion of the wheel-liner: chock wheels with wheel chocks, raise one front corner with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then remove liner clips/screws with a trim clip removal tool and short Phillips screwdriver.
Step 4: Remove the bulb connector and dust cap
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back (use a flashlight to see the tab).
- Remove the rear dust cap by twisting it counterclockwise by hand.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- Depending on your headlamp, the bulb may be held by a twist-lock base or a spring clip.
- If it’s twist-lock: rotate the bulb base counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- If it’s spring-clip: release the clip and swing it away, then remove the bulb.
- Take a quick photo for orientation.
Step 6: Install the new bulb
- Match the new bulb to the old bulb’s type/markings before installing.
- Install the new bulb in the same orientation as the old one (do not force it).
- Lock it in place (twist-lock clockwise or re-secure the spring clip).
- Reinstall the dust cap (hand-tight) and reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 3–6 for the other headlamp.
- Reinstall any ducts, covers, and clips using a 10mm socket and ratchet.
âś… After Repair
- Turn headlights ON and verify both sides work in the correct mode (low/high).
- Check that dust caps are fully seated to prevent moisture inside the headlamp.
- If a bulb still doesn’t work, recheck the connector seating and confirm the bulb type matches the housing.

🎯 Ready to get started?
Before I lock this down to the exact bulb type and exact access method for your Sportage, answer these two quick questions:
- Which bulbs are you replacing: low beam, high beam, or both?
- Are your headlights HID/LED (very bright white/blue and often says “D1S/D3S” or has a ballast) or halogen (more yellow and uses a simple plug)?
