🔧 Sorento - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)

On your Sorento, the left and right headlight bulbs are replaced from behind the headlamp housing in the engine bay. The exact steps depend on whether you’re replacing the low beam or high beam, and whether your Sorento has halogen bulbs or HID/LED headlights.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let headlights cool first; bulbs get very hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use clean gloves.
  • ⚠️ If your Sorento has HID (xenon): there is high voltage at the ballast. Turn lights OFF and disconnect the battery negative terminal before touching the rear of the headlamp.
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep tools away from the radiator fan area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the headlights OFF.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to identify the rear covers/connectors on each headlamp.
  • If equipped with HID (xenon) low beams: disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Quick check: the low beam is usually the larger rear cover; the high beam is often a smaller socket closer to the inner side of the housing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)

  • Use a flashlight and look behind the headlight: you’ll see bulb sockets/covers.
  • Turn the headlight switch ON briefly to confirm which side is out, then switch OFF.
  • Replacing both sides in pairs is best.

Step 2: Make room if access is tight

  • If your hand won’t fit, remove nearby plastic ducting/covers using a trim clip removal tool.
  • If there are 10mm fasteners, remove them with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Reinstall those 10mm fasteners later Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the rear dust cover (if equipped)

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Twist the rear cover counterclockwise by hand and pull it off (some covers pull straight off).

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle gently—do not pull on the wires.

Step 5: Remove the bulb

  • If it’s a twist-lock bulb: rotate the bulb counterclockwise and pull it out.
  • If it uses a metal retaining clip: push the clip in and swing it down, then remove the bulb.
  • Keep note of the bulb’s orientation so the new one seats the same way.

Step 6: Install the new bulb (do not touch the glass)

  • With nitrile gloves, insert the new bulb in the same orientation.
  • Lock it in place by twisting clockwise or re-securing the retaining clip.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry before installing.

Step 7: Reconnect and seal everything

  • Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the rear dust cover and twist it fully closed to keep moisture out.
  • Reinstall any ducts/covers you moved using the trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
  • For any 10mm fasteners reinstalled: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

Step 8: Repeat on the other headlight

  • Do the same bulb on the opposite side so brightness/color match.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn headlights ON and verify low beam and high beam operation on both sides.
  • Check that the rear dust covers are fully seated (prevents condensation inside the headlamp).
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it using a 10mm socket and confirm no warning lights.
