How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2018 GMC Yukon (Low & High Beam)
Step-by-step headlamp removal method with tools, parts list, safety tips, and torque specs

🔧 Yukon - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs by pulling each headlamp assembly forward, then swapping the bulb(s) from the back of the housing. This method avoids fighting tight access behind the lights and is the most consistent way to do both sides.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlamps OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ If your Yukon has HID (xenon) low beams, the system uses high voltage; disconnect the battery negative cable and wait 5 minutes before unplugging HID components.
- ⚠️ Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the headlamp assembly so it doesn’t scratch the bumper or fender.

- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension

- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Fender cover

- Upper sight shield push retainers (if any break) - Qty: 2-6
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and install a fender cover.
- If your Yukon has HID low beams: use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable, then wait 5 minutes.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the upper radiator sight shield
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop up the plastic retainers along the top cover.
- Remove any 10mm bolts with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Lift the sight shield off and set it aside.
Step 2: Unbolt the headlamp assembly (one side at a time)
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the headlamp mounting bolts (typically along the top and one lower/inner bolt).
- Keep the bolts in a small tray so they don’t get lost.
- Work one side fully, then repeat.
Step 3: Pull the headlamp forward and unplug it
- Gently pull the headlamp assembly straight forward.
- If it feels stuck, check for a missed fastener and re-check with a flashlight (use your phone light).
- Disconnect the main electrical connector by pressing the lock tab (use a small flathead screwdriver only if needed) and pulling the connector straight off.
Step 4: Remove the bulb(s) from the back of the headlamp
- Locate the rear dust cover(s) and bulb socket(s) on the back of the headlamp housing.
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out (some positions may have a dust cap you remove first).
Step 5: Install the new bulbs (choose the path that matches your setup)
- Halogen bulb style: Put on nitrile gloves, install the new bulb without touching the glass, then twist clockwise to lock.
- HID (xenon) bulb style: Make sure the battery negative is disconnected. Transfer/remove the igniter (the twist-lock electrical “collar” on the bulb) carefully, install the new HID bulb fully seated, then reinstall the igniter and lock it. Do not force the bulb into place.
- If you’re replacing both “headlight bulbs,” repeat for the other side so both low beams match in color and brightness.
Step 6: Reinstall the headlamp assembly
- Reconnect the headlamp electrical connector until it clicks.
- Slide the headlamp straight back into position, making sure the locating pins line up.
- Install the mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Use a torque wrench (in-lb) and 10mm socket: Torque to 80 in-lb (9 Nm).
Step 7: Reinstall the upper sight shield
- Set the sight shield back in place.
- Reinstall bolts with a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall the plastic retainers by pushing them in until fully seated.
Step 8: Restore power (if disconnected)
- If you disconnected the battery: reconnect the negative cable using a 10mm socket.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlamps on and verify low beams and high beams work on both sides.
- Check for bulb-out warnings on the dash.
- At night, confirm the beams aim evenly; if the pattern looks off, the headlamp may not be seated on its locating pins.
