🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

On your Silverado, the headlamp assemblies need to be removed to access the bulbs. This job is straightforward, but the bulbs and connectors are fragile, so work slowly and keep fingerprints off the glass or lens area.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching anything.
  • If your truck has HID bulbs, the lighting system uses high voltage. Do not touch the bulb leads or ballast connectors with the system powered.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you are uncomfortable working around the headlamp connectors.
  • Do not touch the bulb glass. Oils from your fingers can shorten bulb life.
  • Support the headlamp housing carefully so you do not scratch the bumper or grille.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Trim panel tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off and remove the key fob from the truck.
  • Let the front lamps cool if they were just on.
  • Assumption: this is for the low-beam headlight bulbs on the High Country lamp housing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood

  • Pull the hood release inside the cab, then release the safety latch at the front.
  • Raise and secure the hood fully.

Step 2: Remove the upper headlamp fasteners

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the upper mounting bolts for the headlamp housing.
  • Keep the bolts in order so they go back in the same spots.

Step 3: Release the headlamp assembly

  • Use a trim panel tool to gently release any retaining clips at the top edge.
  • Pull the headlamp housing straight forward with both hands.
  • Do not twist the housing.

Step 4: Disconnect the electrical connectors

  • Use your hand to unplug the headlamp connector and any bulb connectors on the back of the housing.
  • If a connector is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully to help lift the lock tab.

Step 5: Remove the old bulbs

  • Twist each bulb socket or bulb assembly counterclockwise by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • If your lamp uses HID bulbs, handle the bulb by the base only.
  • Keep the bulb aligned during removal.

Step 6: Install the new bulbs

  • Install the new bulb into the socket or housing using the same alignment as the old one.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
  • Reconnect any electrical plugs until they click.

Step 7: Reinstall the headlamp assembly

  • Slide the housing back into position by hand.
  • Install the upper mounting bolts with a 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs).

Step 8: Test the lights

  • Turn the ignition on and switch the headlights on.
  • Check both sides for low beam operation and proper aim.
  • If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb seating.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify both headlights work on low beam and high beam.
  • Check for warning messages on the dash.
  • Make sure the headlamp housings sit flush with the grille and fender.
