🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement
Replacing both headlight bulbs on your RAV4 is a straightforward job if you take your time and keep the bulbs clean. The key is to avoid touching the glass and to make sure each bulb is fully seated so the beam pattern stays correct.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool before starting.
- Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs. Skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- If your RAV4 has HID or LED headlamp units, the bulb area may have high-voltage components. Do not open any ballast or driver housing.
- Use care around the front bumper and headlamp lens. Scratches are easy to make.
- Battery disconnect is not required for a basic bulb swap, but the lights should be switched off.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and make sure the engine is cool.
- Work one side at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access to the headlamp area
- Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlamp housing.
- If space is tight, use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove any nearby intake duct or cover that blocks access.
- Keep removed fasteners organized.
Step 2: Remove the bulb cover
- Use your hand to twist off the rear dust cap or bulb cover on one side.
- If the cover is stuck, gently use a flat-blade trim tool to start it loose.
- Do not force plastic parts.
Step 3: Disconnect the bulb
- Wear latex or nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Press the connector tab and pull the electrical connector straight off the bulb.
- If there is a retaining ring or clip, release it carefully by hand.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Use your hand to twist the bulb counterclockwise and pull it straight out.
- Keep the bulb upright so you can compare the indexing tabs on the new bulb.
- Do not touch the glass.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Line up the new bulb with the tabs and insert it into the housing.
- Twist it clockwise by hand until fully seated.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.
- There is no torque spec for the bulb itself; it should be snug and fully locked by hand.
Step 6: Reinstall the cover and repeat on the other side
- Reinstall the dust cap or bulb cover by hand until it seals fully.
- Put back any air duct or cover you removed using the 10mm socket and ratchet.
- Repeat the same process on the other headlight bulb.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and verify both bulbs light up.
- Check low beam, high beam, and turn signal operation if they share the housing area.
- Make sure the beam aim looks even on a wall or garage door.
- If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb seating.
